What's Wrong?
Description
I redeemed a Claude Code Max 20x gift subscription with the period 24 April – 24 May 2026.
The subscription activated successfully and worked normally for approximately 4 days. After that, my account was silently reverted to the Free plan with no warning, no cancellation email, and no action from my side.
Timeline
- Redeemed / activated: ~24 April 2026
- Worked correctly: ~4 days
- Downgraded to Free plan: ~28 April 2026
- Current status: Account shows Free plan, but the paid invoice is still visible and marked as Paid.
What I have already tried
- Contacted support multiple times via the in-app chat.
- Support (Fin AI agent) keeps sending generic automated replies and has not resolved the issue.
- I already tweeted @bcherny about this.
Evidence
- Paid invoice is available and shows the correct gift period (24 Apr – 24 May 2026).
- No cancellation or refund on my side.
- This appears to be an entitlement mismatch between the billing system and the account plan.
Additional context
This is a recurring issue. Many other users have reported the exact same problem with Max 20x (and Max 5x) gift subscriptions being silently downgraded to Free after 3–7 days (see related issues: #47286, #48399, #49744, #48231, etc.).
Please escalate this to the billing/engineering team to fix the entitlement sync for gift subscriptions.

What Should Happen?
The Max 20x gift subscription should remain active for the full period (24 April – 24 May 2026) without automatically downgrading to the Free plan.After successful redemption and payment (invoice shows Paid), the account should stay on the paid plan with full access until the end of the subscription term.
Error Messages/Logs
No error message is displayed.My account silently reverted to the Free plan after ~4 days.However, when I check the Billing section in my Claude account, the invoice is still clearly visible and shows as "Paid".
Steps to Reproduce
Redeem a Claude Code Max 20x gift subscription (in my case: 24 Apr – 24 May 2026).
Use the subscription normally for a few days (it works correctly at first).
After approximately 4 days, the account automatically and silently downgrades to the Free plan.
Check the Billing page → the invoice is still visible and shows as "Paid".
No cancellation, no email, no warning — access to paid features is lost.
