[BUG] Claude Pro gift subscription downgraded to Free after 5 days
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
My Claude Pro gift subscription was automatically downgraded to Free after only 5 days, without any action on my part. Invoice confirms the service period is April 4 to May 4, 2026. Support chat (Conversation ID: 215473834680943) confirmed this is a billing bug but was unable to escalate or fix it. No email response after 6 days. Related issues: #44163, #45335
What Should Happen?
The Pro gift subscription should remain active for the full gifted period (April 4 to May 4, 2026). The account should not revert to Free until the gift period expires.

I’ve been in a similar situation since yesterday.
I activated a "Max 20x" subscription using an e-gift. On April 4th, I received a confirmation email and was actively using the subscription.
However, on the 14th, while trying to continue development via the Claude Code CLI, I was prompted to enter "/login." This ultimately redirected me to "https://claude.ai/," where I discovered my status had reverted to "Free plan."
All attempts to resolve this via the "Fin AI Agent" (or by emailing support@anthropic.com) lead to either an infinite loop or a suggestion to "File a bug on the Claude Code GitHub Issues page." Once reported there, the issue is automatically "github-actions added invalid and removed bug" just like the many other similar cases already described there.
The only example of a somewhat successful resolution I’ve found is here: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/31012#issuecomment-4165877763
I have the same problem.
I received a pro subscription through a gift, but today it changed to a free plan. I paid on April 6.
Their AI agent is just a complete disgrace, does not help in any way and leads in circles, just wasting time.
I have the same issue. I tried to get a resolution through Fin (unsurprisingly without success), and I emailed support@anthropic.com
(complete silence). This is essentially taking money without delivering - refusing to provide already-paid services and completely ignoring support requests.
So I subscribed to Codex. Scam company isn’t worth supporting with your money.
If you bought a Claude Max/Pro gift code from resellers like GamsGo and your subscription was silently downgraded to 'Free' after a few days, STOP waiting for Anthropic’s support. They will ignore you.
I’ve spent the last 8 days fighting this and successfully escalated it to federal agencies and payment gateways. Here is the exact truth of what is happening and the step-by-step manual to get your money back.
🚨 THE SCAM STRUCTURE (The "Double-Dip" Trap)
There is a systemic billing bug between Anthropic and Stripe. But here is the most malicious part: When the system inevitably cancels your subscription and processes an automated refund, the money goes back to the RESELLER'S original payment card, not you.
GamsGo knows this. They keep your money, they quietly receive the refund from Anthropic, and they blame the AI for the issue, leaving you with no service and no cash.
⚔️ ACTION PLAN: HOW TO FIGHT BACK
STEP 1: Nuke their Trustpilot (The only thing they fear)
Do not waste time with GamsGo customer service. Go straight to Trustpilot and leave a 1-star review.
CRITICAL: Include your GamsGo Order ID in the review. If you don't, they will flag it as spam to delete it.
They will email you within 24 hours begging you to delete the review for a refund. DO NOT DELETE OR CHANGE IT until the cash is physically sitting in your bank account. Store credits are a trap.
STEP 2: File an FTC Fraud Complaint (US Federal Trade Commission)
Anthropic is an American company ignoring a massive billing flaw that enriches resellers. Go to reportfraud.ftc.gov and file a complaint against Anthropic PBC.
Keep the FTC Report Number. It transforms your issue from a simple "billing error" to a "reported federal fraud case."
STEP 3: Force a Chargeback with your Bank / Payment Gateway
Call your credit card company, PayPal, or local Payment Gateway (PG).
Do not say "I want a refund." Say: "I bought a digital service, the seller revoked my access after a week, and they are refusing to refund. I have officially reported this to the US FTC for consumer fraud (give them the report number)." * Banks will almost always side with you when a federal report number is involved. If GamsGo asks you to cancel the chargeback first to "process the refund," IT IS A TRAP. Once you cancel a chargeback, you can never open it again.
Stop waiting for Fin AI. Stop begging GamsGo. Hit their Trustpilot, file the FTC report, and chargeback immediately. Good luck.
I also created a ticket as a last hope for assistance.
After creating the ticket, I received an email saying: "This issue will be automatically closed as a duplicate in 3 days."
The chatbot in the Get Help section of the Claude web version provides vague answers, without any timelines for resolution or even a reference number for my request. There is no confidence that anyone will actually address this issue.
The bot also emphasizes that no compensation is provided for downtime, which effectively means that every day without the paid subscription is entirely my problem.
I also see many other open tickets with a similar issue.
I hope for a quick resolution 🙂

Same here. Joined the downgraded club - Pro → Free. Also used a gift card. Also got hit on April 13-14, 2026. Also silence from Anthropic for 3 days now on my ticket.
Has anyone actually gotten this resolved yet? What are you doing - just waiting?
One thing I didn't fully understand from the previous messages: did the refund to the gift card seller happen automatically? Even if my billing page shows "Paid" and the Stripe invoice says "Paid", can the money still have been returned to the gift card seller?
Thanks for any clarification.
I am experiencing the same bug. My 1-month Claude Pro gift subscription was silently downgraded to the Free plan before the gift period ended, with absolutely no action on my part.
Account details:
Impact:
I received this as a gift from someone and am now unable to use the Pro features I was given. The support chat bot (Fin) acknowledges the bug but says it cannot escalate or manually restore the subscription. Email to [support@anthropic.com](mailto:support@anthropic.com) only receives automated responses with no resolution.
This is extremely frustrating. I have a limited gift period and every day that passes without a fix is a day of paid access permanently lost — time that cannot be refunded or extended.
This appears to be a systemic Stripe billing logic bug where gift subscriptions ($0 invoices) are being incorrectly treated as failed payments and auto-canceled. Multiple users are reporting the exact same pattern across issues #44163, #45335, #48231, #49744.
Request: Please have a backend engineer manually restore the Pro entitlement for affected accounts, and prioritize a permanent fix for this billing bug. Every day of delay means more gift recipients losing access they were promised.
Same here but I actually paid for the things instead of it being gift only

Closing for now — inactive for too long. Please open a new issue if this is still relevant.
