Preflight

  • [x] I have searched existing issues; this matches a documented recurring pattern (see Related below)
  • [x] This is a single bug report
  • [x] Using the latest version of Claude Code

What's wrong

This is not a Claude Code runtime bug. It is a Claude.ai consumer billing/entitlement
mismatch. I am filing here because Anthropic appears to route claude.ai billing issues
to this repository (see #45662, #81869), and because the normal support channel has not
produced a human review.

A Claude Max 5x upgrade was purchased and charged successfully. The invoice shows Paid.
The account still displays the Pro plan and still enforces Pro-tier usage limits.

Timeline

  • Aug 1, 2026 — Attempted upgrade from Pro to Max 5x via Settings > Billing on

claude.ai. Payment failed.

  • Aug 2, 2026 — Retried the same upgrade. Payment succeeded. Anthropic issued a

receipt and an invoice marked Paid. Amount: INR 11,057.24 (Max 5x).

  • Aug 2 – Aug 4, 2026 — Account continues to show Pro. Usage limits remain at

Pro tier. No plan change has ever appeared.

Expected behavior

Per Anthropic's own documentation, a Pro-to-Max upgrade takes effect immediately with
prorated billing. The account should show Max 5x and grant Max 5x usage limits for the
paid billing period.

Actual behavior

  • Settings > Billing: payment shown as successful, invoice status Paid
  • Plan displayed: Pro
  • Usage limits: Pro tier
  • No downgrade notice, no failed-payment notice, no past-due state

What I have already ruled out

  • Single account. I have only ever had one Claude account. No alternate emails.
  • Correct login email. Signed in with the exact email used for the purchase.
  • No secondary payment failure. Billing settings show no past-due or declined state.
  • Session cache. Signed out and back in across web and desktop; hard refreshed.
  • Not an app-store purchase. Bought directly through claude.ai, so this is not an

App Store / Play Store sync issue.

I have deliberately not re-subscribed or cancelled, since that risks a second charge
against an unresolved paid invoice.

Support channel outcome

I contacted support and received a reply from the Fin AI agent. It confirmed the payment
and invoice, then suggested two checks — verifying the login email and re-checking billing
status — both of which I had already stated were ruled out in my original message. The
reply acknowledged that a successful Max 5x charge failing to apply the plan is not a
typical outcome and that it lacked visibility into the account, but it did not escalate.
Follow-up messages returned the same agent.

Possible root cause

Issue #57594 reports that support escalation checks the Claude Console / API organization
rather than the Claude.ai consumer subscription record, and that a single account can carry
two organization contexts. If that applies here, the agent may be querying an org that has
no record of this subscription, which would explain the "no visibility" response despite a
Paid consumer invoice.

Related issues

  • #57594 — Support escalation checks API org instead of Claude.ai subscription billing
  • #66558 — Paid invoice shows Paid but account remains on Free plan
  • #45110 — Pro subscription paid but account shows Free plan
  • #45890 — claude.ai subscription not applied to account

What I'm asking for

  1. Escalation to a human billing specialist who can query the Claude.ai consumer

subscription record directly.

  1. Manual reconciliation of the paid invoice with account entitlement — apply Max 5x

and its usage limits for the paid billing period.

  1. Failing that, a refund to the original payment method so I can subscribe cleanly.

I can provide the invoice ID, receipt number, account email, and screenshots privately to
Anthropic staff. I am not posting them here because this tracker is public.

Environment

  • Platform: Web (claude.ai) + Claude Code
  • Purchase route: claude.ai Settings > Billing (not App Store / Play Store)
  • Region: India (INR billing)

What Should Happen?

Per Anthropic's documentation, upgrading from Pro to Max 5x takes effect immediately,
with billing prorated for the remainder of the current cycle.

So after the successful Aug 2, 2026 payment (invoice status: Paid), the account should:

  1. Display "Max 5x" as the active plan in Settings > Billing
  2. Grant Max 5x usage limits across claude.ai and Claude Code for the paid billing period
  3. Not remain on Pro with Pro-tier limits while a Paid invoice for Max 5x exists

Additionally, where a paid invoice and account entitlement do not match, there should be a
working escalation path to a human billing specialist who can query the Claude.ai consumer
subscription record and reconcile the two.

Steps to Reproduce

Note: this is a Claude.ai consumer billing/entitlement issue, not a code-level bug, so
there is no code or minimal example to attach. The reproduction is an account-state
sequence on claude.ai.

  1. Hold an active Claude Pro subscription on a claude.ai account (single account, no

alternate emails, purchased directly on claude.ai rather than via App Store or
Play Store).

  1. Go to Settings > Billing and select "Upgrade to Max". Choose the 5x tier. Enter

payment details and confirm.

  1. Observe the payment fail. (Occurred Aug 1, 2026.)
  1. Repeat step 2 the following day with the same account and payment method.

(Occurred Aug 2, 2026.)

  1. Observe the payment succeed: Anthropic issues a receipt by email, and Settings >

Billing shows the payment as successful with the invoice status Paid for
INR 11,057.24 (Max 5x).

  1. Return to Settings > Billing and check the active plan.

Expected: "Max 5x"
Actual: "Pro"

  1. Use Claude on claude.ai and Claude Code, and check usage limits.

Expected: Max 5x limits
Actual: Pro-tier limits, unchanged

  1. Sign out and sign back in across web and desktop, and hard refresh. Observe the

plan still displays Pro. No downgrade notice, failed-payment notice, or past-due
state appears anywhere in billing.

  1. State persists unchanged through Aug 4, 2026 (2+ days after the successful charge).

The failed attempt at step 3 followed by the successful retry at step 4 may be relevant
to the root cause — the first attempt may have left a partial or orphaned subscription
record that the second, successful charge then failed to overwrite.
