Problem Statement

I keep the system tray option enabled on Windows, because most of the time I want closing the window (X) to keep Claude Desktop running in the background.

But sometimes I want to fully quit the app. Right now the only way to do that while the tray option is on is to go through the system tray icon or the app menu. There is no keyboard shortcut for it, unlike macOS where Cmd+Q always fully quits the app no matter how window closing behaves.

Turning the tray option off is not a good fix: it changes the X button behavior for every close, when I only want to fully quit occasionally.

Proposed Solution

Add a default keyboard shortcut on Windows (e.g. Ctrl+Q) that always fully quits Claude Desktop, matching Cmd+Q on macOS.

  • The shortcut should work independently of the system tray setting: even when "keep running in the system tray" is enabled, Ctrl+Q exits the app completely (no window, no tray process left running).
  • The X button keeps following the tray setting as it does today, so the two behaviors complement each other: X = hide to tray, Ctrl+Q = quit.
  • Ideally the shortcut is shown next to the Quit/Exit item in the app menu so it is discoverable.

Alternative Solutions

  • Right-click the system tray icon → Quit, or app menu → Exit. Works, but takes several clicks each time, and the tray icon is often hidden in the overflow area.
  • Turn off the system tray option so X quits the app. This works, but then I lose the hide-to-tray behavior I want for everyday use. I'd have to toggle the setting back and forth.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

  1. During the day I use Claude Desktop on Windows with the system tray option enabled, so clicking X just hides it to the tray. This is what I want most of the time.
  2. At the end of the day (or before restarting the app), I want to fully quit it.
  3. Today I have to find the tray icon, right-click it and choose Quit.
  4. With this feature, I would just press Ctrl+Q and the app would exit immediately, the same way Cmd+Q works on macOS — without changing my tray setting.

Additional Context

  • Environment: Windows, Claude Desktop (latest version)
  • Ctrl+Q is a common quit shortcut in many cross-platform desktop apps on Windows/Linux, so it would feel familiar.
  • This is different from #90719 (making X quit the app): I want X to keep hiding to the tray, plus a separate shortcut to fully quit when needed.
