Problem Statement

With agent view on, typing /exit in a session doesn't quit Claude Code, and neither does pressing Ctrl+D twice. Both move the conversation to the background and open the agent view, whose hint reads: "Your conversation moved to the background — enter opens it · esc returns to it · ctrl+c twice quits". Ctrl+C twice is the only way to quit that it offers.

On Windows, Ctrl+C means copy, and many Windows users remap it. I use AutoHotkey so that Ctrl+C copies in my terminal, which leaves me no way out of the agent view except closing the terminal window or pausing AutoHotkey. Before agent view, picking up an update took seconds: /exit, then claude -c in the same terminal.

Proposed Solution

  • Give the agent view a way to quit that doesn't need Ctrl+C: accept /exit typed at its prompt, honor a rebound app:exit or app:interrupt from keybindings.json, or both.
  • Build the hint from the key actually bound, instead of the fixed text "ctrl+c twice quits".

Alternative Solutions

Setting "disableAgentView": true in ~/.claude/settings.json makes /exit quit to the shell again, but it gives up agent view entirely, and it blocks claude stop and claude attach (see bug number #102165).

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Feature Category

Interactive mode (TUI)

Use Case Example

  1. Claude Code installs an update in the background, and the footer shows "Update installed · Restart to update".
  2. I type /exit to restart onto the new version.
  3. Instead of the shell, I land in the agent view. With Ctrl+C mapped to copy, my only way out is closing the terminal window, opening a new one, and finding my way back to the conversation.

Additional Context

Related, but none asks for a way to quit the agent view without Ctrl+C:

  • #89586: /exit lists sessions instead of terminating (macOS).
  • #97583: Ctrl+Z now opens the same screen instead of suspending to the shell.
  • #78928: make the double-press exit configurable, or app:exit rebindable, in the session itself.

Environment: Claude Code 2.1.299 (also seen on 2.1.296), Windows 11 Pro, Git Bash (mintty).
