What's Wrong?

Claude Desktop on macOS cannot be quit through any standard mechanism. Every attempt to quit the app leaves it running as an unresponsive background process. The only way to fully terminate it is via Force Quit.

What Should Happen?

Claude Desktop should quit regularly

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Launch Claude Desktop
  2. Attempt to quit via Cmd+Q, the menu bar (Claude → Quit Claude), or right-clicking the Dock icon and selecting Quit
  3. The app window closes, but the process continues running in the background
  4. The app is completely unresponsive — it cannot be reopened or interacted with
  5. Force Quit (Cmd+Option+Esc or Activity Monitor) is the only way to terminate it
