[BUG] Claude Desktop blank screen on MacBook Air 2019 - Intel UHD 617 - persistent after reinstall
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Environment
- Claude Desktop version: 1.3883.0 (93ff6c)
- macOS: Sonoma 14.8.5
- Device: MacBook Air 2019, Intel Core i5 1.6GHz, Intel UHD Graphics 617
- RAM: 8GB
Issue
Claude Desktop shows a blank white screen on startup and intermittently during use. The app is running (visible in dock) but nothing renders.
What I've tried
- Cleared cache and restarted → no fix
- Full uninstall and reinstall → no fix
- --disable-gpu flag in Terminal → gives "GPU access not allowed" error on this version
- Cmd+R → partially works as temporary workaround but screen goes blank again
- Mission Control trick (3-finger swipe) → doesn't fix it
Impact
Claude Cowork is my main working tool. This makes it very difficult to work normally.
Workaround
Cmd+R temporarily refreshes the screen but issue returns frequently.
What Should Happen?
Claude Desktop should open and render correctly on MacBook Air 2019 with Intel UHD Graphics 617. The app should display the full interface (Chat, Cowork, Code tabs) without showing a blank white screen.
