What Claude Actually Did
Claude began searching files for context, got part way through the process and then just stopped. I nudged it after pressing escape and asking if it had hung, tried it again and then it restarted the searches and then said " API Error: Stream idle timeout - partial response received". This has happened in multiple sessions. Since last night, Claude code has been unusable. I have tried everything to fix, but no joy.
Expected Behavior
Functioning claude code.

Everything - its hanging and looping and API is timing out.Permission Mode

Same here, since yesterday it's nothing but a wall of
API Error: Stream idle timeout.Once it hits once, no amount of restarting CC, resending messages, etc.. will fix it. If I start a new session (clean context) it works again for a couple messages, I get the same error over and over again.
I mostly can't get past the planning stage on anything.

Claude Code for Windows v 1.1617.0 (8d6345).
This is happening in the Claude desktop app for OSX (Claude 1.1617.0 (8d6345) 2026-04-09T16:10:15.000Z) but not in Claude Code CLI.

Confirming bug persists in Windows Desktop after updating to Claude 1.2278.0 (e5213f) 2026-04-13T17:49:21.000Z. And it's really frustrating. I'm getting the error every other message, even when repeatedly alerting and reminding the agent to split up work into smaller chunks. There is no indication in the logs that anything went wrong at all.
It just lights my tokens on fire and says _you're welcome_. 🙄
Edit: I updated to "new Claude" today with the high hopes that this would be solved. But nope, the very first prompt got the same error back.

The issue appears to happen with me when Claude Code wants to use 'write' to add a lot of lines in python. I have to tell it to use 'edit' instead, or to only write small amounts at a time.
It keeps happening the Windows desktop app of Claude Code (version 1.3109.0) and its Web based interface: "API Error: Stream idle timeout - partial response received". Frustrating and token wasting.
The only workaround that seemed to have worked is prompting "Split the above job to small chunks to evade the API Error: Stream idle timeout - partial response received"
Yep. Still happening in Claude 1.4758.0 (fb266c) 2026-04-24T20:22:30.000Z, and arguably getting worse.
