[Bug] Anthropic API rate limit error in Xcode while other Claude clients unaffected
Bug Description
Claude code in Xcode reports "The request would exceed your account's rate limit" but I can still use the Mac Claude app and console. This started a few days ago (today is 2 December) and continues. I try to use Claude in Xcode once a day and receive the same error. Claude (in his support guise) and I chatted about this and he/it/whatever seems to think it's an issue with Xcode not updating usage data correctly. I'm a little dubious because as soon as I signed up for Claude, it worked fine, and then Xcode updated usage such that it said I ran out of tokens or something. Anyway, regardless, something is not working and I am not able to use the Xcode plug-in for Claude. I killed Xcode and tried again, and that didn't work. I rebooted my Mac (the ctrl-alt-del solution) and that didn't work.

I filed a bug against Xcode - it's FB21223586.

I tried on Xcode 26.1.1 with the same (negative) results.
I request my issue not be automatically closed - the "duplicate" issues are for Windows and Linux, not macOS and Xcode.
FWIW I'm seeing the same behaviour.
Claude Code shows I've used barely any of my limits:
` Current session
██▌ 5% used
Resets 10:59am (Europe/London)
Current week (all models)
█████████████▌ 27% used
Resets Dec 5 at 9:59am (Europe/London)`
XCode however reports the same error as OP. I've just updated to the latest version of XCode and the issue persists.
Thank you!
I installed Xcode 26.2 beta 2 and tried again. The results were the same but reported slightly differently. I still see the text "Your request couldn't be completed," but there is no explanatory text now. I wonder if I uninstalled all instances I have of Xcode, rebooted, then reinstalled Xcode and logged back into Claude, if that would work? It certainly doesn't sound like a viable solution, though...
I am still getting this same error, and cannot figure out how to fix it.
I still see it as well. I am using the macOS Claude desktop app and working that way, though it's awkward. I may delete Xcode, reboot my system, then reinstall to see if that does anything...
same here. Finally tried using Claud, then paid for Pro and an hour later ran into this. Another issue https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/12579 was closed as it was deemed to be a problem with Apple Intelligence & Xcode
after installing the new macOS version + Xcode RC 26.2 it is currently working for me. not sure if it is related but let's see how long.
A month ago I ran into this issue on the cheaper tier and reached out. Was told this from support.
However I don't believe that's completely true, when I upgraded to the next tier I'm pretty sure I exceeded the 10% weekly cap on it and kept on working until recently when I hit this issue again.
I'm on the Pro tier and when I read before I purchased the plan, there were no limitations on Xcode that I could see (or I would not have purchased it). Hopefully it's an Xcode issue and not a restriction put into place by Anthropic.
I just went into their Xcode documentation and read:
Link to Support Article
It doesn't mention any other rates, and also specifically mentions that it counts toward the same rate.
I just checked again (after a full 24 hours) and am still unable to use it, despite my usage limits being 0% for the session and 19% for the week.
I just swapped back to ChatGPT and after 2 hours ran into the same problem with it
"You've hit your usage limit for ChatGPT in Xcode. Please try again later or sign in with a paid account"
I do have a paid ChatGPT account, so this is definately something Xcode related, as I can easily use ChatGPT & Claude apps & webinterface, but the Xcode one keeps running into some unknown & undisclosed limits constantly
Last time I used ChatGPT it was bugged and using the free/guest version and not recognizing my paid for one. So you might have that issue too.
My Claude just re-engaged in xcode again, around an hour after the session limit reset. See how long it runs for.
Curious... Mine also started working as of a few minutes ago. Had been locked out due to the imaginary limit for roughly 24h
Mine suddenly worked as well. I installed Xcode 26.2 RC and found I had to log into Claude Code. I did, and it responded. Whatever the reason why, I'm happy it's working.
This 10% allocation has been in place since the Xcode integration was introduced. However, based on feedback we've received from users, I just received confirmation from our engineering team that we've made an update.Starting next week, the 10% Xcode cap will be removed.
You'll be able to use your full weekly allocation within Xcode without the 10% restriction.
This was an undocumented usage limit from Anthropic.
This is very good news - thank you!
Seeing as I have been able to use it for almost 2 days it seems they have indeed fixed the fundamental problem. The only occasional hiccup I got was:
I think that the software itself was fine - it was just a policy change that was needed. I'm happy it was fixed. If there are no more issues by the middle of next week, (~10 December), I'll close this issue.
