Environment
- Claude desktop app (Code tab), Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26300. App version: 2.16120.0.0 (Claude Code 2.1.285)
- Target: Gmail compose in Chrome
Steps
- Open a
.mdfile containing a bullet list in the file viewer pane. - Select the rendered content and copy.
- Paste into a Gmail compose window. It looks correct.
- Send. In the delivered message every list's items sit on one line, side by side.
Expected: lists arrive as normal vertical lists.
Comparison: the same file copied from VS Code's markdown preview arrives intact.
Cause (from the clipboard's HTML format)
The viewer styles <ul> and <ol> as flex containers, and that is copied as inline style:
<ul style="... list-style: outside; gap: 6px; flex-direction: column; display: flex; ...">
<li style="...">First bullet</li>
...
</ul>
Gmail keeps display: flex on send but drops flex-direction: column, so the list falls back to a row. Nested <ul> and <ol> have the same style.
Suggested fix: space list items with li margins instead of display: flex; gap on the list, or strip layout styles in a copy handler so the clipboard holds plain <ul><li> markup.
Also seen in the copied HTML
- Every element carries a very long inline
font-familystack (about 1.5 KB each), so a 15-line file becomes about 19 KB of HTML. - Spaces around inline
<strong>are copied as<span> </span>.
