What's Wrong?
Summary
I am posting this publicly to document my experience and to warn other users who are considering purchasing an expensive Claude Max subscription.
On September 16, 2026, I paid $216 USD for a Claude Max subscription directly through Claude using my Visa card.
My paid access was terminated on the same day.
I was therefore unable to meaningfully use the subscription I had just purchased.
Anthropic subsequently permanently closed my account, cancelled my subscription, and refused to refund the $216 charge.
I am not posting this to request another account appeal. My appeal has already been completed and Anthropic has stated that the account will remain closed.
The issue I am raising here is much simpler:
Anthropic accepted $216 for a paid subscription, terminated access to that subscription on the same day, and is retaining the full payment.
What I was using Claude for
Before my account was terminated, my usage consisted of ordinary technical/software-development questions.
For example, I was asking about:
- configuring CLI tools;
- software development;
- optimizing game performance.
I was not knowingly using Claude for illegal activity.
Timeline
September 16, 2026
- Purchased Claude Max.
- Amount charged: $216 USD.
- Payment method: Visa.
- Paid access was terminated on the same day.
After the termination
- I submitted an appeal.
- Anthropic ultimately informed me that my account would remain closed and described this as its final decision.
- Anthropic also confirmed that my paid subscription had been cancelled.
Refund request
- More than 10 days passed without a refund.
- I contacted Anthropic Subscription Support.
- The automated Fin agent initially denied the refund.
- I specifically requested escalation to a human billing/support agent.
- The case was escalated to human support.
A human Anthropic Support representative subsequently told me:
“After reviewing your account, we are unable to issue a refund for your subscription due to a violation of our Consumer Terms of Service.”
Anthropic directed me back to the account appeals process and stated that further messages regarding banned accounts might not receive a response.
The unresolved problem
I am not asking Anthropic to restore my account through this GitHub issue.
If Anthropic decides that it does not want me as a customer, that is a separate account-enforcement issue.
My concern is the billing outcome:
I paid $216 for Claude Max, Anthropic terminated my access on the day of purchase, and Anthropic has refused to return the $216.
Anthropic has referred generally to a violation of its Consumer Terms of Service.
However, in the responses I received, I was not told:
- which specific provision of the Consumer Terms I allegedly violated;
- which specific activity triggered the enforcement action;
- why that alleged violation justifies retaining the entire $216 payment when the paid service was terminated on the day it was purchased.
I have asked Anthropic to identify the specific contractual provision relied upon for the refund denial.
This does not appear to be an isolated complaint
Before posting this issue, I searched the public Claude Code issue tracker.
I found other users publicly reporting similar experiences involving paid Claude subscriptions being suspended or disabled shortly after payment, followed by refund or support problems.
Examples include reports involving:
- a $249 Max 20x subscription followed by account suspension the next day and no reported automatic refund;
- a $100 Max subscription followed by account disablement shortly after purchase and no reported refund at the time of the issue;
- approximately $209 in subscription payments/upgrades followed by account disablement and loss of paid access;
- another Max 20x customer reporting suspension roughly an hour after payment and later having account access restored without the paid Max entitlement being restored or the unused period refunded at the time of the report.
I encourage prospective customers to search this repository for reports involving terms such as:
Max, account disabled, account suspended, refund, and subscription.
Users should review these reports and Anthropic's refund and enforcement policies before deciding whether to purchase an expensive Max subscription.
What I am requesting from Anthropic
I would like Anthropic to provide one of the following:
- A full refund of the $216 Claude Max charge to the original payment method, since access to the paid service was terminated on the day of purchase;
or, if Anthropic maintains that the payment is non-refundable:
- A specific written explanation identifying:
- the exact Consumer Terms provision Anthropic determined was violated;
- the contractual provision Anthropic relies upon to retain the full subscription payment;
- why no refund is provided when Anthropic terminates access to a newly purchased paid subscription on the same day.
I am not asking GitHub maintainers to adjudicate whether my account should be reinstated.
I am documenting a billing and consumer experience issue involving Claude Max and Claude Code access, and I believe prospective customers should be aware that this outcome can occur.
Advice to other users
If you are considering purchasing Claude Max, especially the more expensive Max tiers, I recommend keeping copies of:
- your payment receipt;
- subscription confirmation;
- invoices;
- account suspension/termination messages;
- appeal decisions;
- support conversations;
- refund decisions.
If your paid access is terminated, preserve the complete timeline and all written correspondence.
I have retained my payment record, account termination notice, subscription cancellation notice, appeal decision, support ticket, and Anthropic's written refusal to refund the $216 charge.
I can provide relevant records privately to an authorized Anthropic representative if necessary.
For privacy and payment security reasons, I will not publish my full card information or other sensitive account information in this public GitHub issue.
