[BUG] Claude Desktop (Windows) — taskbar icon renders as solid black square
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Product: Claude Desktop, Windows
Version: Version 1.40609.0 (f65e38)
OS build: 26200.9106
Symptom:
The Claude Desktop icon pinned to the Windows taskbar renders as a solid black square with no visible glyph. This is isolated to the taskbar — the icon renders correctly in Task Manager's process list and in the Start menu, which points to a defect specific to the taskbar icon resource rather than a corrupted install.
Troubleshooting already attempted, no effect:
- Matching in-app Appearance theme to Windows taskbar light/dark mode
- Unpinning and re-pinning the app from the taskbar
- Rebuilding the Windows icon cache (IconCache.db / iconcache_*.db + explorer restart) - Updating to the latest Claude Desktop version
- Uninstall/reinstall
Likely related (not identical) prior reports on the public tracker:
- anthropics/claude-code#59477 — taskbar icon pixelated due to missing MSIX Square44x44Logo targetsize-NN asset variants
- anthropics/claude-code#72622 — tray icon invisible due to theme/ taskbar contrast mismatch
Given Task Manager and Start Menu icons are unaffected, this looks like the taskbar-specific targetsize asset set is either missing or corrupted in this build, causing a render failure to a solid black tile rather than the pixelation reported in #59477.
What Should Happen?
Taskbar should show normal "orange spark" Claude icon.
