File explorer sidebar collapses when opening a file (desktop app)

Resolved 💬 3 comments Opened May 22, 2026 by marcuspaivio Closed May 25, 2026

Bug

In the Claude Code desktop app, clicking a file in the file explorer sidebar causes the explorer to close/collapse. This forces re-opening the sidebar every time I want to browse to another file, which makes quickly navigating between files much slower than it should be.

Expected behaviour

The file explorer stays open (like in VS Code, Cursor, etc.) so I can click through multiple files in succession. Optionally, a setting or pin/toggle would let users choose between auto-collapse and persistent sidebar behaviour.

Environment

  • Platform: Windows 11 Enterprise (10.0.26200)
  • Claude Code: desktop app
  • Behaviour reproduces consistently on every file open

Note

Couldn't find this documented as intentional or configurable in the docs — filing as a bug, but happy for it to be re-tagged as a feature request if the auto-collapse is by design and a "pin sidebar" option is what's needed.
