Problem Statement
Problem Statement
When using Claude Desktop's Code tab, there's no way to visually browse, explore, or annotate the local codebase. This creates a "blind mode" experience where:
- Users must describe files to Claude rather than pointing at them
- No way to add inline annotations or comments to code while developing
- Can't visually reference the code structure while working
- Differs significantly from ChatGPT's annotation/visual feedback capabilities
Motivation
ChatGPT's ability to annotate uploaded PDFs, images, and HTML helps developers:
- See context visually while discussing code
- Add comments directly on code sections
- Understand architecture through visual exploration
- Track changes with visual feedback
Claude Desktop should offer similar capabilities for local codebases.
Proposed Solution
Add a visual file tree sidebar to the Claude Desktop Code tab that allows:
- File browser - Browse the project's directory structure
- Code preview - Click files to see syntax-highlighted content
- Annotations - Ability to add inline comments/annotations to code sections
- Visual context - Claude can reference specific lines with visual feedback
- Jump-to-file - Click code references in chat to jump to the relevant file
Examples
- ChatGPT with annotations: Can markup PDFs, images, and HTML inline
- CloudCLI UI (community tool): Already has working file explorer for Claude Code
- VS Code + Claude extension: Provides visual browsing alongside chat
Why This Matters
This isn't just about aesthetics—visual code exploration is a fundamental part of how humans understand codebases. Removing this from the Claude Desktop experience forces a conversational-only workflow that doesn't match how developers actually work.

Additional Context
This feature would differentiate Claude Code from competitors like Cursor and bring the Desktop app closer to feature parity with community-built tools like CloudCLI UI and Code-Bar.
