Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

In VSCode, under Windows, when using the former version of Claude Code (in terminal), you could just drag a file from your file explorer, hold Shift, and then drop it right into CC, where if would import the file path into your prompt.

With the new revamped CC, this feature does not appear to work anymore.

What Should Happen?

As described above, drag and dropping from the File Explorer or from the tab header of a given file should import its path into your prompt in CC.

Error Messages/Logs

Steps to Reproduce

Try to grab a file from your file explorer and drop it in the CC window while holding Shift

Same experience on Windows, CC vscode plugin v2.0.2. Works fine in the native CLI

I have something in the works to support drag-and-drop, should hopefully be available in an update before the end of week!

@hackyon-anthropic Can you elaborate on if this will support multiple file drag-and-drop?

Multiple file drag-and-drop in both Claude Code terminal use-cases as well as the newer Claude Code VS Code UI would be ace.

Here's a vid of the ideal DX workflow I _think_ many want.

We added support for this into v2.0.5! Please download the latest version and give it a spin. Happy to hear any feedback you may have for it!

Confirmed it works on Windows w/git-bash.

Hi @hackyon-anthropic it's still not working on my MacOS VS Code. I've already upgraded my claude code to v2.0.5

thefitcorp · 9 months ago

It is still not working on Windows VS Code or Cursor.

There’s a misunderstanding. The problem is the extension for IDE. Run
Claude directly on the terminal, and it works. I stopped using the IDE
extension.

Can you upload a video of the repro steps? I'm curious what platform you are working on and what you are trying to drag into the extension.

You should be able to drag/drop in the native extensions. You will need to hold shift so vscode can redirect the file to us rather than open in the tab

does not work in VScode

For the users who are having trouble, here's a demo of how it works:

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/30f54963-7a51-4bf0-be82-9321b26fa1d3

You need to hold shift before you drop in the window (VSCode should already be showing a notification for it).
