Preflight Checklist

- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
The bug is that the Claude setting "Run on Startup" doesn't appear to work properly.
I try to turn it off but it gets turned back on immediately by Claude.
I have tried every trick in the book - as suggested by Claude - to make sure there are no other settings on my system which would cause this setting to be set to on.
What Should Happen?
The setting "Run on Startup" should be turned off - and stay off.

To be honest - I don't understand some of the questions you ask such as:
- Which API platform are you using?
- Which terminal/Shell are you using?

Commenting on the auto github action:
Looking at the bug descriptions of the two bugs github mentions, they appear to be totally unrelated to the bug I reported.
I've noticed the same bug. area:desktop platform:windows
Same here. It's pretty invasive. Claude keeps popping up in my task manager and using system resources without me ever asking for it. If this isn't fixed anytime soon, I guess it's their way of shoving their service up my a.. And will make me cancel my subscription...
Closing for now — inactive for too long. Please open a new issue if this is still relevant.
This is still happening as of 20 July 2026. This persistent bug has also been mentioned explicitly by #57371 as a "separate but related issue," which shows it's been noticed by others more than once. Please reopen and fix #48078. Do not let the bot close it until fixed.
Still an issue (August 2026), needs to be reopened or linked to where it's being addressed.
Still an issue (August 2026) causing boot issues for me
Still happening as of August 2026. In-app "Run on Startup" toggle in Claude Desktop Settings won't stay OFF on Windows -- it reverts to ON on its own after leaving and re-entering settings. Windows Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager's Startup tab correctly show Claude as Disabled and hold that state, so the bug is isolated to the in-app toggle/UI, not the actual OS-level registration. Workaround: disable autostart in both Claude Desktop and Windows Settings, then add a shortcut manually to your user Startup folder (shell:startup) to launch on login instead. Please reopen -- this is clearly still active based on the recent comments here.
