Claude Code should understand how many tokens were spent on activities

I would love it if Claude Code were to have awareness of how many tokens it has spent on each interaction between user prompts. And maybe also segmented by some other reasonable milestone?

The reason is that then I can have a conversation with Claude about how to optimize token utilization during our reviews. It may be as simple as providing an instruction that will stop it from banging its head against the wall in an unproductive way.
