What's wrong

The Claude iOS app shows a "Claude is thinking" Live Activity on the Dynamic Island while a response generates, even with Live Activities turned off for Claude in iOS Settings. It comes back on every new response.

Expected

No Live Activity when Live Activities is disabled for the app. An in-app toggle to turn it off would also help.

Steps to reproduce

  1. iOS Settings > Claude > Live Activities: off
  2. Force-quit and relaunch Claude
  3. Send a message
  4. "Claude is thinking" appears on the Dynamic Island

Tried

Dismissing it, force-quitting, restarting the phone, reinstalling the app. Persists through all.

Environment

  • Device: iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iOS version: latest release as of 2026-10-10
  • Claude app version: latest App Store version as of 2026-10-10

Additional context after looking into this more.

Replies are generated server-side, so they finish whether the app is open, backgrounded, or on another conversation. Suspending the app only drops the stream, and the reply is there when you come back. So the Dynamic Island indicator ("Claude's reply / Thinking..." with a stop button) mostly buys a progress indicator, a stop button, and maybe a slightly faster catch-up on return.

That's a thin payoff for something that shows on every single message with no way to turn it off. It also takes far more screen space than the in-app indicator, which already shows the same status: when it expands it feels like roughly a fifth of the screen, versus a few percent for the in-app one.

Request: add an in-app toggle to disable the Dynamic Island indicator, or respect the iOS Live Activities setting for the app.

One more data point on why this matters.

The app already sends a notification when a reply or task finishes, so the Live Activity duplicates that signal rather than adding a new one.

It also scales badly with long-running work. Some of my tasks run for more than 24 hours, and for that whole time the indicator occupies the Dynamic Island and a large part of the top of the screen, and it can push aside other Live Activities and alerts that are more time-sensitive. A status indicator should be opt-in, or at least easy to turn off, for exactly this case.

Two more details.

  1. Confirmed in Settings > Claude > Live Activities: both "Allow Live Activities" and "More Frequent Updates" are off, and the indicator still appears on every chat reply.
  2. It only appears for chat. Claude Code sessions in the same app, including ones that run for over 24 hours, never show it. So the app already handles long-running work fine without it, and chat replies, which complete server-side, need it even less.

Possible cause, unverified: the progress bar and stop control look like iOS 26's continued-processing task UI (BGContinuedProcessingTask) rather than an ActivityKit Live Activity. That would explain why the Live Activities setting has no effect. If so, dropping it for chat replies, or putting it behind an in-app toggle, would fix this for users who keep a minimal notification setup.

More evidence for the continued-processing theory: with Background App Refresh turned off for Claude, the indicator now ends with "Claude's reply / Task failed" (warning icon), even though the reply completed normally in the app. So the indicator tracks the local background task rather than the server-side reply, and in this configuration it reports a failure that didn't happen. It's both noisy and inaccurate, which makes an off switch more important.

Same here, can confirm.

Device: iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 27.0, Claude app 1.261005.20

Settings > Claude > Live Activities is off, the Dynamic Island / Live Activity still appears on every response. It started recently, I did not change any settings before.

Additional data point: the phone also vibrates at the end of every response. Turning off the haptic feedback toggle inside the Claude app and System Haptics in iOS Settings did not stop it. Notifications for Claude are off as well. The vibration only stops when Do Not Disturb / Focus is on.

I would rather not disable vibration globally via Accessibility > Touch > Vibration. Either an in-app toggle for the Live Activity, or respecting the iOS Live Activities setting, would fix this.

Also, this issue was labeled invalid because it was filed in the Claude Code repo. Could someone route it to the iOS app team?
