Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Since the Claude desktop update to 2.37337.1 on 2026-10-13, the Code tab shows context-window usage nowhere in the footer on macOS:

  • the usage ring next to the model picker fills with the plan window, not the context window;
  • clicking it opens the Usage popover with only Session limit, Weekly, Weekly · Fable and Cloud session credits. There is no context row and no breakdown.

The data is still there in the same session: the app's own session-usage tool reports tokensUsed 108239 / contextWindow 1000000 / percentUsed 11 with the per-category breakdown, and /context prints the same figures. Only the display dropped it.

The docs still describe the old behaviour: "Click the usage ring next to the model picker to see your current context window usage and your plan usage for the period" (https://code.claude.com/docs/en/desktop.md, "Check usage").

#102094 and #102103 report the same symptom on Windows (both labelled platform:windows). This is the macOS report.

What Should Happen?

The usage ring popover lists the session's context window (used / total, percentage) next to the plan windows, as it did on the previous desktop build and as the docs describe.

Error Messages/Logs

(none — no error; the row is simply absent)

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Claude desktop 2.37337.1 on macOS, Code tab, any session.
  2. Click the usage ring next to the model picker.
  3. Observe the Usage popover: Session limit, Weekly, Weekly · Fable, Cloud session credits. No context row.
  4. Type /context in the same session: it prints the context usage, so the figure is available.

Screenshot of the Usage popover after the update (macOS): plan windows only, no context row.

UX regressions like these in the AI-era are the sign of a pathetic company who does not give a single fuck. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CARE A LITTLE BIT, ANTHROPIC. Unfuckingbelievable.

I opened the same issue (#102176) for the Windows desktop app.

Clearly context limits aren't a major concern internally at Anthropic, but they are a concern for paying users, particularly during lengthy development sessions.

What's especially frustrating is that OpenAI faced substantial user complaints when it similarly removed convenient context visibility from its Codex desktop app. A quick look at that issue would have demonstrated how strongly developers value this functionality:

https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/23794

I wish Anthropic would actually consider user feedback before making changes such as this.

Until the context row comes back to the ring / popover, here is a workaround I put together: a small Claude Code mod that keeps one dim line directly above the prompt, in the desktop app and in the terminal:

context 14% · session 17% · weekly 31% · Fable 35%

It refreshes after every turn, costs no sidebar space, and needs no panel kept open. context is the session's context-window fill; session / weekly are the plan windows; the last entries are the per-model weekly windows the account has.

Repo: https://github.com/JiahaoXu10Arthur/context-band

Two ways to install:

  1. In a terminal session of Claude Code:

``
/plugin install context-band --marketplace JiahaoXu10Arthur/context-band
``

  1. Or paste the repo link into any Claude Code session (desktop included) and ask Claude to install it — it runs claude plugin marketplace add and claude plugin install for you.

Either way it is installed at user scope, so it loads in every later session, desktop ones included.

This is a stopgap, not a replacement for the built-in readout — the ask in this issue stands. If it is useful to you, a star helps others find it.
