Problem Statement

This is about the Code tab of the Claude desktop app (macOS), not the terminal CLI.

Claude's answers there are often long: audits, plans, numbered lists with 20+ items. I read such an answer top to bottom and reply to individual items as I go, quoting the part I'm answering.

Every time I send a reply and Claude answers, the transcript moves to the bottom and I lose the place where I stopped reading. To continue with the next item I have to scroll up through several screens and find it by eye. With one long answer and 5–10 replies in a row, this happens after every single reply.

My quoted reply shows what I answered to, but I couldn't find a way to get from it back to where that text is in the transcript.

Proposed Solution

Make the quote in a reply a link to its source:

  1. Clicking the quoted snippet in my message scrolls the transcript to the original passage and briefly highlights it.
  2. Optionally, after Claude has answered a quoted reply, show a small "Back to where you were reading" control that returns to that passage.

Either one solves the problem; the first is the minimal version.

Alternative Solutions

  • Scrolling up manually, or Cmd+F for a phrase from the item. Works, but slow, and I have to remember a phrase.
  • Asking Claude to mark chapters (the session table of contents). Good for jumping between phases of work, but not to a specific paragraph inside one long answer.
  • Asking Claude to repeat item numbers in every answer. A workaround that depends on the model remembering to do it.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

  1. I ask Claude to audit the startup items on my Mac. The answer is a list of 22 items with a recommendation for each.
  2. I read item 7, select a phrase in it and reply: "I use this one sometimes."
  3. Claude answers at the bottom of the transcript. I'm now about five screens below item 7.
  4. I want to go on to item 8. Today: scroll up and search by eye. With this feature: one click on the quote in my message and I'm back at item 7.

Additional Context

  • Surface: Claude desktop app for macOS, Code tab. Claude Code 2.1.289, macOS 27.0.1.
  • Related: #87917 asked for a "Mark" action to keep the reading position and was closed as not planned. #95237 asks for persistent inline annotations on a response before sending. That one is about collecting comments before a reply; this one is about getting back to the passage after the reply is sent, so they complement each other.
