What's wrong?
Voice dictation accuracy using the microphone button in the Claude Code VS Code extension is noticeably worse than voice input on the claude.ai web chat. The same voice, same microphone, and same speech produce much more accurate transcription on the web than in the VS Code extension.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open the Claude Code panel in VS Code and click the microphone button to dictate a prompt.
- Compare the transcription accuracy to dictating the same sentence using voice input on claude.ai in a browser.
- Observe that the VS Code extension's transcription contains noticeably more errors.
What I've already tried:
- Set accessibility.voice.speechLanguage explicitly in VS Code settings (previously blank/auto): no improvement.
- Confirmed microphone hardware works correctly (same mic performs accurately on claude.ai web).
- Checked for a separate voice/language setting within the Claude Code panel itself: none found; it appears to inherit VS Code's accessibility setting.
Environment:
- OS: Windows 11
- Using Claude Code as the VS Code extension (not CLI)
- Voice input via the built-in microphone button in the extension panel
This is a meaningful accessibility issue. I rely on voice dictation due to a disability, and the accuracy gap makes the VS Code extension considerably harder to use than the web experience.
