[BUG] "Reset for free" (Opus 5.5 try-out) applied automatically when Max 20x → 5x downgrade took effect
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet (related but different: #76093 and #79773 cover weekly meters after a mid-cycle upgrade)
- [x] This is a single bug report
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
I was on Max 20x and had scheduled a downgrade to Max 5x, effective on my billing date (Oct 1, 2026). My account also had the saved "Reset for free" (Opus 5.5 try-out) limit reset, which I had not used.
When the downgrade took effect, the "Reset for free" (Opus 5.5 try-out) appears to have been applied automatically. I did not click it. Both weekly meters went to 0% at the same moment the plan changed to Max 5x:
| Time (CEST) | Plan label | 5-hour | Weekly · all models | Weekly · Fable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 1, 08:20 | Max (20x) | 0% | 87% | 43% |
| Oct 1, 13:15 | – | 2% | 90% | 44% |
| Oct 1, 13:19 | Max (5x) | 3% | 0% | 0% |
The weekly reset time did not change (Sat Oct 3, 19:00 CEST). Nothing in the app said a reset had been applied or that the downgrade had taken effect.
The downgrade confirmation screen ("Change to Max 5X plan") gave only one warning: "Switching to Max 5x means you'll have less usage and may hit your limits faster." It did not mention the saved reset at all.
What Should Happen?
- The "Reset for free" (Opus 5.5 try-out) should only be applied when the user clicks it, not silently consumed by a plan change.
- If a downgrade does use up or apply the reset, that should be documented and shown to the user before they confirm the downgrade, and the app should show a notice when it happens.
- The app should show when a scheduled downgrade has taken effect.
Error Messages/Logs
No error messages. The readings above come from the Claude Desktop usage card and its local usage history file (%APPDATA%\Claude\plan-usage-history.json), which logged weekly 90% at 13:15:54 CEST and the usage card showed 0% / 0% at 13:19 CEST.
Steps to Reproduce
- Be on Max 20x with an unused "Reset for free" (Opus 5.5 try-out) and high weekly usage (here about 90%).
- Schedule a downgrade to Max 5x (Settings → plan → Change to Max 5x; it takes effect on the next billing date).
- When the downgrade takes effect, check Settings → Usage: both weekly meters are at 0%, the plan label shows Max (5x), and the reset was applied without any action from the user.
Is this a regression?

I also had the same issue. I was on a 20x max plan when I got the reset, and did not use it. I had renewed at 5x max and noticed that my free usage reset was either consumed or disappeared entirely. I don't know because I noticed after my weekly reset had rolled over. Either way, I lost my free reset. I was hoping to upgrade back to 20x in a few weeks again, and still be able to use this.
Another data point, on a different downgrade path: Max 5x → Pro.
I had scheduled the downgrade earlier; it took effect when my Max billing period ended on Oct 6, 2026 at 19:00 UTC+8 (11:00 UTC). I had an unused "Reset for free" (Opus 5.5 try-out) limit reset and did not click it. The confirmation screen when I scheduled the downgrade did not mention it. After the downgrade took effect, the Resets section was gone from Settings > Usage.
My usage readings around that time (logged every 5 minutes):
| Time (UTC+8) | Plan | 5-hour | Weekly · all models | Weekly · Fable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 6, 18:55 | Max (5x) | 1% | 52% | 28% |
| Oct 6, 19:00 | Max (5x) | 2% | 52% | 28% |
| Oct 6, 19:05 | Pro | 1% | 0% | no longer reported |
| Oct 6, 19:10 | Pro | 3% | 0% | no longer reported |
Because the 5-hour window restarted too, I can't tell from this whether the saved reset was applied, or whether the plan change re-initialised all meters and the reset was simply dropped. Either way it disappeared without any notice before or after the downgrade.

/usageshows, notplan-usage-history.json(I don't use Claude Desktop). The Plan column is what I was subscribed to; the log has no plan label.Confirmed successful recovery after upgrading back to Max 20x!
I wanted to share a positive data point for others experiencing this issue.
My subscription history:
I can confirm that the reset option returned to my account after upgrading back to Max 20x.
This is just one account's experience, so I can't confirm whether it works universally. However, it demonstrates that the button can reappear after a downgrade and subsequent upgrade.
Hope this helps others who lost their free reset!
Another data point: my "Reset for free" button came back after I upgraded to Max 5x.
