Problem Statement

Area

Claude Desktop app — conversation transcript UI, Windows

Environment

  • OS: Windows 11
  • App: Claude Desktop (MSIX package)
  • Version: <pega aquí la salida de Get-AppxPackage -Name Claude | Select Version>

Describe the problem

On claude.ai (web) and on the macOS desktop app, selecting a passage of text inside a conversation surfaces a floating "Reply" action that quotes the selection into the input box. This lets the user anchor a follow-up question to one specific part of a long answer.

On the Windows desktop app, no such popup or context-menu entry appears. Selecting text produces only the standard OS selection, with no Claude-specific action.

This is a platform parity gap rather than a new capability: issue #95144 confirms the floating "Reply" popup already exists on macOS (it is labelled platform:macos and requests a keyboard shortcut for the already-shipped mouse action).

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open the Claude Desktop app on Windows.
  2. Open any conversation containing a long assistant response.
  3. Select a sentence or paragraph inside that response with the mouse.

Expected behaviour

A floating action appears over the selection offering "Reply" (and ideally "Ask about this"), which inserts the selected text as a quote into the composer, as it does on macOS and on claude.ai.

Actual behaviour

No floating action and no context-menu entry appear. The only way to reference a specific passage is to copy it manually and paste it into the composer with Markdown quote syntax.

Additional impact

The manual workaround is itself degraded on desktop: partial text selection is reported to copy the entire message rather than the highlighted fragment (#53975, #50425). Together these two issues make passage-level referencing on Windows materially harder than on the other two surfaces.

Related issues

  • #95144 — confirms the "Reply" popup exists on macOS (keyboard-shortcut request)
  • #58691 — right-click "Reply to this" on response text
  • #67427 — "Quote to input" button when selecting text in chat
  • #26716 — native quote/citation UI for in-conversation message references
  • #53975 / #50425 — partial selection copies the whole message on desktop

Why this matters

Users working across web, macOS and Windows hit inconsistent behaviour on the same account. In long, multi-topic professional conversations, quoting a specific passage is the primary mechanism for keeping a thread unambiguous; losing it on one platform forces those users back to the browser.

Proposed Solution

Include this functionality as soon as possible (available on the web but not on desktop app (not always working on MacOS, never seen in Windows)
