Also getting this issue. I'm on a personal Max subscription.

The /design skill (documented as available on Max, research preview since v2.1.234) no longer works for my account. Running "/design <brief>" returns: "In this session /design only manages agent access to Claude Design projects: tell the user to run /design consent or /design revoke."

Verified on Claude Code 2.1.282, 2.1.265, and 2.1.260. Artifacts otherwise work in the same sessions. I ran /design-consent successfully ("Design agent access granted") and it made no difference. The Artifact tool reports "No Artifact types are listed for this account (the type catalog isn't available to it yet)."

Same here on Windows, VS Code extension, Claude Code 2.1.283 (also seen on 2.1.282). The design canvas skill no longer registers, so /design only offers the consent options and an existing canvas can no longer be re-seeded from its .dc.html artboards.

It looks like a server-side flag rather than a code removal:

  • The skill is still bundled in the 2.1.283 binary (seed-canvas.mjs, payload.template.html, and the canvas SKILL.md are all present).
  • Its registration is gated by isDesignCanvasSkillEnabled, which requires the feature flag tengu_ethereal_nova (default true in the code).
  • The cached value in ~/.claude.json is "tengu_ethereal_nova": false.
  • Artifacts work normally in the same session, and allow_design_sync isn't the cause, so neither of the conditions described in #92138 applies.
  • The last version that extracted the canvas skill on this machine was 2.1.263, so the flag changed somewhere between 2.1.263 and 2.1.278.

Could someone confirm whether the preview was deliberately turned off for some accounts, and whether it is coming back? We use the canvas as our team's design record, so losing the re-seed step blocks updating it.

@justjoeyuk Troubleshooting led me to the same feature flag. Enabling it in the feature flag cache in ~/.claude.json and using a proxy to block the feature flag fetch on launch gets /design working again for me on 2.1.283. Workaround script here.

However, tengu_ethereal_nova seems to have been removed in 2.1.284. Claude now says:

In 2.1.284 the canvas skill is gone. /design instead asks the artifact type catalog for a "Design" type, gated by the org policy key allow_cobalt_plinth_bramble. Your org's catalog returns nothing, so the command falls through to the consent stub.

So, still broken on 2.1.284
