Summary

In the VS Code extension's bottom toolbar, every button opens a menu except the context/availability indicator, which runs /compact immediately on click. Please make that button a menu too — ideally a permanent Usage button with a Context section that shows the current context state and offers Compact as an explicit action inside it.

What happens today

  • The bottom toolbar buttons (model, permission mode, etc.) all open a menu on click, so a click is safe: you see options before anything happens.
  • The context/availability indicator is the one exception: a single click on it triggers /compact directly.
  • Compaction is a lossy, non-reversible operation on the conversation. Running it from a mis-click, on a control that sits beside menu-style buttons, is easy to do by accident. I did exactly that today mid-way through a long multi-agent session — the session recovered only because its state was on disk.

What I'd like

  • A permanent Usage button in the bottom toolbar, consistent with the other buttons (click = open a menu, never an immediate action).
  • Inside it, a Context section showing the current context usage (what the indicator shows now), plus a Compact button. Compact should be a deliberate second click, not the primary click on the toolbar control.
  • Optionally the same place could surface session usage/cost, so "usage" and "context" live together and the toolbar has one fewer single-purpose control.

Environment

  • Claude Code VS Code extension anthropic.claude-code 2.1.278 (win32-x64)
  • VS Code 1.138.0
  • Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26200
