Environment

  • VS Code extension anthropic.claude-code 2.1.278 (macOS, Darwin 25.5). Present since the agent map with background tasks was added in 2.1.275 (“[VSCode] Added background shells and other running tasks to the agent map, each with a Stop”); nothing about it changed in 2.1.276–2.1.278 per CHANGELOG.

What happens

  • A list of agents is rendered above the conversation feed. It does not scroll with the feed.
  • Every agent the session process ever launched stays in the list after completion. One long session shows “45 agents”, most of them finished hours or days ago (one row shows an agent that ran 1210 min ago). A sibling session accumulated ~180 rows (66 subagents + ~115 background Bash tasks) over 48 h.
  • Each new agent adds a row, so the scrollable chat area gets shorter with every launch. In practice the user's own messages and Claude's answers scroll out of view within seconds, and the user cannot react to questions Claude asks.
  • Focus view (Ctrl+Option+F) collapses tool rows inside the feed but does not affect this pinned list.
  • TaskStop cannot remove the rows: for every completed agent it returns No task found with ID: … (tested on agents that finished 40 min ago and 2 days ago in the same process), i.e. completed agents are already gone from the task registry but remain in the pinned list.
  • /compact does not clear it: rows kept accumulating across three compactions in one session.
  • The count is process-scoped: 45 in the map vs 128 subagent transcripts on disk for the same session vs 0 tasks visible to TaskStop.

Expected

  • Completed/stopped agents leave the pinned list (or move under a collapsible “completed” group), and the list has a bounded height or scrolls independently of the feed.
  • A way to clear or collapse the list (setting or command).

Related

  • #75863 (feature: Background Tasks panel) — open, no reply
  • #77326 (subagent transcript rendered inline, no collapse) — closed as not planned; about the feed, not this pinned list
  • #75877 (completed rows lingering in agent view after SendMessage resume)
  • #64651 (background agent output streams into foreground chat)

Screenshot of the “45 agents” map and the shrunken feed can be attached on request.
