Problem

In the Claude Desktop app (Code tab), the model menu order is fixed: Sonnet 5, Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Haiku 4.5. I use Opus as my daily model and would like it at the top.

The CLI already supports this through the modelPicker setting in ~/.claude/settings.json (v2.1.242+), which controls the /model picker's order and labels. I set it with replaceBuiltInOptions: true and the order Opus → Fable → Sonnet → Haiku. The Desktop app menu still shows the built-in order, including after fully quitting and relaunching the app. The only Desktop behavior the docs mention for the picker is hiding or greying out models that availableModels excludes.

Proposal

Either:

  1. Have the Desktop app's model menu read the same user-scoped modelPicker setting the CLI uses, so one setting controls both; or
  2. Add a way to reorder (or pin) models directly in the Desktop menu.

Option 1 seems cheapest, since the setting and its rules (user/managed scope only, ignored in project settings) already exist.

Why it matters

The model you use most should be the easiest to reach. Setting "model": "opus" makes Opus the default for new sessions, but switching back to it mid-session still means finding it in the middle of the list.

Environment

  • Claude Code 2.1.278 (bundled in Claude Desktop)
  • macOS
