Dictation: speaking after a manual edit discards the edit and resumes from the old text
Product: Claude Code desktop app (Windows 11 Pro 26200), dictation / voice input in the message box.
Problem 1 - manual edits are discarded when dictation resumes
Steps to reproduce:
- Dictate a sentence into the message box.
- Without stopping the microphone, click into the text and correct it by hand (backspace, delete a phrase, retype a word).
- Start speaking again.
Expected: the new speech is appended to the text as it now stands.
Actual: the manual edit is wiped. The box is restored to the text dictation last produced, and the new speech is appended to that. Everything typed or deleted by hand in between is lost.
Workaround in use: switch the microphone off before touching the keyboard, edit, then switch it back on. This happens many times an hour and is the single biggest friction in the product.
Requested fix: treat the text box as the source of truth. When dictation resumes, append to the box's current contents; never restore a previous dictation buffer over the user's own edits.
Problem 2 - line breaks are lost the moment dictation resumes
Steps to reproduce:
- Paste text into the message box.
- Press Shift+Enter a few times to put blank lines after it, so what is dictated next is readable as a separate paragraph.
- Start speaking.
Expected: the new speech begins where the cursor is, after the blank lines.
Actual: the blank lines are discarded and the speech is appended directly onto the end of the pasted text, running it all together as one block. There is no way to dictate a new paragraph after pasted text.
Requested fix: same root cause as Problem 1 - respect the box's current contents and cursor position, including whitespace the user added, instead of restoring a previous buffer.
Problem 3 - transcription accuracy
Words are dropped and substituted often enough that a sentence frequently has to be corrected before sending, which then runs straight into Problem 1. Accuracy is visibly worse than other dictation engines on the same machine and microphone.
Microphone: Jabra Link 390 USB headset.
Impact
Heavy daily dictation user - long technical sessions, most input dictated rather than typed.
