Problem Statement

I maintain instructions shared across Claude Code interfaces. Those instructions sometimes need to select interface-specific guidance and record which environment an evaluation used.

The Claude Code engine version alone does not identify the host interface. For example, instructions for the standalone CLI may not apply in the Desktop Code tab.

I have not found a documented, supported way for the user or assistant to obtain the current host/entrypoint in ordinary session context without configuring telemetry or relying on internal implementation details.

Proposed Solution

Provide and document a supported way to read the current Claude Code host interface and execution entrypoint within a session, without enabling OpenTelemetry. A structured session field or a read-only command would work.

Please document the supported values and interfaces, distinguish a Desktop host from a CLI process it launches, and allow an explicit unknown value where the host cannot be established.

If an existing supported interface already meets this need, a documentation reference would resolve the request.

Alternative Solutions

Alternatives include manually declaring the host in startup instructions, configuring telemetry, or inspecting internal environment variables and session files.

Manual declarations can become stale when switching interfaces. Telemetry adds configuration for this narrow need. Internal fields may be useful, but without documented semantics and support guarantees I would hesitate to make shared instructions depend on them.

Priority

Low - Nice to have

Feature Category

Developer tools/SDK

Use Case Example

The same project is opened first in the standalone CLI and later in Claude Desktop's Code tab. At initialization, the assistant reads supported session metadata, selects the appropriate interface-specific instructions, and records the environment alongside the task's evaluation evidence.

Additional Context

The monitoring documentation already describes app.entrypoint and OTEL_METRICS_INCLUDE_ENTRYPOINT:
https://code.claude.com/docs/en/monitoring-usage#standard-attributes

I asked Claude support about access without telemetry. Its reply said the documentation does not describe such an interface and referred me to GitHub. This was not confirmation from engineering that no interface exists.

This request specifically concerns supported access to host/entrypoint metadata in Claude Code. It does not depend on the broader model-behavior claims in those reports.
