Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

In the Claude Desktop app on Windows, Code tab, the file pane (the editor that opens on the right when you click a file path in the chat) used to have a copy button in the top-right of its toolbar - a two-overlapping-squares icon - that copied the entire contents of the open file to the clipboard. It is now gone.

The file pane toolbar currently shows only: show file tree, file name, search files, file settings, open in new window, expand, close. No copy-contents control appears anywhere in the pane, including on hover.

This broke a frequently used workflow: open the .sql file Claude generated in the file pane, click copy, paste the whole file straight into an external database SQL editor. The remaining option is to click into the editor and press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C, which is not discoverable.

Note: the file pane copy-contents button is not documented at https://code.claude.com/docs/en/desktop (that page mentions only "click the path in the pane header to copy the absolute path" and a right-click "Copy path"), so it is unclear whether this was an intentional removal or a regression.

What Should Happen?

The file pane toolbar should include a button that copies the full contents of the open file to the clipboard in one click, as it did previously. If the button was intentionally removed, please restore it or provide and document an equivalent one-click action (for example a "Copy file contents" entry in the right-click context menu).

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open the Claude Desktop app on Windows and go to the Code tab.
  2. In a session, have Claude create or edit a file (in my case a .sql file).
  3. Click the file path in the chat to open it in the file pane on the right.
  4. Look at the top-right of the file pane toolbar, and hover over it.
  5. Expected: a copy button (two overlapping squares) that copies the whole file's contents.

Actual: the toolbar contains only show file tree, file name, search files, file settings, open in new window, expand, and close. No copy-contents button is present.

Additional Information

The button was present until roughly the last week (reporting on 2026-09-07). No settings were changed, and I am not aware of any toggle that controls it.

Environment: Claude Desktop app 1.46388.4 (Electron 42.10.0, Node 24.18.1), Windows x64. This is the desktop app's Code tab, not the terminal CLI, so the Terminal/Shell and Platform fields above are approximations.

Current workaround: click inside the file pane, then Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C.
