[BUG] Claude Desktop (macOS) still bundles darwin-x64-only node-pty, triggers Rosetta/Intel-app deprecation warning

Environment

  • macOS 26 (Darwin 25.6.0), Apple Silicon (arm64)
  • Claude Desktop app (/Applications/Claude.app), version 1.46388.4
  • CLI claude --version: 2.1.261 — CLI binary itself is native arm64, not affected

ISSUE

Claude.app's main executable is a universal binary (x86_64 arm64) and runs natively on Apple Silicon. However, the bundled node-pty native module used for terminal/PTY support only ships an Intel build:

Contents/Resources/app.asar.unpacked/node_modules/node-pty/prebuilds/darwin-x64/spawn-helper   (x86_64 only, no arm64 slice)

Confirmed via file:

/Applications/Claude.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar.unpacked/node_modules/node-pty/prebuilds/darwin-x64/spawn-helper: Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

No sibling darwin-arm64 prebuild directory exists under node-pty/prebuilds/.

IMPACT

Because this component has no arm64 slice, macOS invokes Rosetta 2 every time the terminal/PTY feature is exercised (e.g. running shell commands via the app's Bash tool / terminal panel). This causes macOS to repeatedly surface the "Apps based on Intel are no longer supported" deprecation notification for Claude Desktop, even though the rest of the app runs natively.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

node-pty should ship (or the build should vendor) the darwin-arm64 prebuild alongside darwin-x64, matching what upstream node-pty already publishes, so the app is Rosetta-free end-to-end on Apple Silicon.

RELATED

This was previously reported in #76416, which was auto-closed by a bot as "doesn't appear to be about Claude Code" without further triage — but it reproduces identically on the current release (1.46388.4) and is specifically about the Claude Desktop app bundle, not third-party software.

REPRO

file "/Applications/Claude.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar.unpacked/node_modules/node-pty/prebuilds/darwin-x64/spawn-helper"
# => x86_64 only (expected: universal x86_64/arm64, or a native darwin-arm64 prebuild alongside it)
