Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Compaction at 53%. No apparent reason. Previous report by me complained about firing at 73% this is much more egregious and happened twice tonight. I backed up a few messages and committed and saved session and started a new one but this is uncalled for that it needs to do so with so much session left. Its bad enough that I can't use 100% of the session but losing 20% on top of that is just painful when it happens. This may be similar to the issue raised that you closed for the guys with 1M context but didn't seem to be. You may likely close this as well but I wanted to let you know because I know what I see and it happened twice prematurely and that hurts. So I am expressing that pain.

What Should Happen?

It should proceed untill ~83% session is gone and then compact. But... I never let it compact because I try to keep from losing useful details and have heard that compaction wastes tokens so want none of it. I carry on in new session with good fidelity and carryover of what I was working on and reconstructed context and memory.

Error Messages/Logs

Nothing I could see other than compacting with normal message at which point as I said I stopped it and went back a couple messages to close out the session cleanly for next session.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Work normally
  2. Get pissed off when early compaction happens when you are in the middle of productive work.
  3. Write an issue because of 2.
