Background
I'm an independent researcher studying self-modifying agent systems, specifically the bootstrapping problem - how a system can use its current capabilities to build better capabilities. Claude Code is particularly interesting in this context because it operates in a full filesystem environment with code execution, which theoretically gives it the substrate for self-directed capability expansion.
I've been running small experiments where I ask Claude Code to solve problems that require creating intermediate tools, and I'm trying to map out the boundary of what's possible. I'm posting here because I think this community would have the most hands-on experience with these dynamics, and I'd value real-world observations over theoretical speculation.
Observations
From my limited experiments so far, I've noticed:
- Claude Code can create new Python scripts and then invoke them as part of solving a larger task
- It can iterate on a tool it just wrote when the first version doesn't work correctly
- There seems to be a practical limit on how far this recursion goes - it rarely goes beyond 2-3 levels of tool-building before returning to the original task
- It doesn't seem to spontaneously decide that it needs a better general-purpose tool unless prompted toward that direction
These are informal observations, not rigorous measurements. I'm curious whether others have seen similar patterns.
Questions
I have three specific questions I'd love to get the community's perspective on:
- Tool creation as capability expansion: Can Claude Code meaningfully extend its own capabilities by creating new tools? By "meaningfully" I mean tools that let it solve classes of problems it couldn't solve before, not just convenience wrappers. Has anyone observed this happening, either spontaneously or with prompting?
- Recursive tool improvement: Has anyone observed a pattern where the agent designs a tool, uses it, identifies a limitation, designs a better version, and repeats this cycle? If so, how deep does this recursion go before it plateaus or gets distracted by the original goal?
- Theoretical boundaries: Are there known fundamental limits to this kind of bootstrapping? For example: is there a complexity ceiling beyond which an agent can't design tools more capable than itself? Or is the limit more practical - context window, attention, or goal direction rather than capability?
What I'm hoping to get out of this discussion
I'm not here to argue that Claude Code is or isn't "self-improving" in any strong sense. I'm interested in the practical engineering question: to what extent can an agent with code execution bootstrap itself into a more capable version of itself, and what stops it?
Any experiences, references, or thoughts would be much appreciated. I'm especially interested in concrete examples, even if they're small.
