[BUG] Max X5 Usage Instantly Reaches 100% After Software Update

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

I am experiencing the same issue reported by other users.

Today, the only action I took was updating the software. After the update, my 5-hour usage quota immediately reached 100%.

I am currently using the Max X5 plan. This afternoon, after my usage was reset, I monitored the usage and noticed that it went from 0% to 100% within approximately 7 minutes. During this time, I was not actively using Claude.

After I finished work, the only device logged into Claude was my mobile phone. I did not use Claude on any other device, and I also did not use Claude Cowork during this period. However, when I checked again just now, my usage had already reached 100% again.

It appears that my usage quota is being consumed even when I am not actively using the service. Could you please help investigate whether there is an issue with the usage calculation, account activity, or a possible bug introduced by the latest update?

What Should Happen?

It appears that my usage quota is being consumed even when I am not actively using the service. Could you please help investigate whether there is an issue with the usage calculation, account activity, or a possible bug introduced by the latest update?

I have same problem, this is summary:
Summary: Phantom usage draining Max plan quota with no activity logs, persisting across logout/restart
Details:
I'm on the Claude Max plan, using Claude Code via the VS Code extension. Since the Fable 5 rollout, I've experienced continuous usage drain with no corresponding activity:
Session and weekly usage meters (All models, Fable) have climbed steadily despite no active use.
I fully logged out of all devices/surfaces (Claude Code, VS Code extension, Claude Desktop, mobile), removed all connected tokens, disabled Claude in Chrome, and restarted my computer entirely (powered off).
Usage continued increasing — most recently drained a full 5-hour session window in ~15 minutes with the laptop powered off and everything disconnected.
My usage dashboard shows no activity log entries corresponding to this usage.
Usage credits toggle is OFF, yet credits were consumed at one point during the initial incident.
Issue has persisted across multiple 5-hour session windows and a weekly reset.
Expected behavior: Usage should only reflect actual activity, and activity logs should show what's consuming quota.
Actual behavior: Usage climbs with zero visible activity and no way to trace the source.
Environment: Claude Max plan, Claude Code (VS Code extension) — no Console/API access.

Unfortunately, it seems that Anthropics is a company that doesn't care about its customers—to the point where they don't even have a support email address.

Yes, this is causing financial loss to paying customers. We paid for the service, yet we're unable to use what we've paid for. It's incredibly disappointing and unacceptable.

I can confirm I am experiencing exactly the same issue.

My Claude Max usage continues increasing while I am completely idle.

The 5-hour limit resets normally, but then starts increasing again without sending any prompts or using Claude Code. My weekly usage is also being consumed automatically.

I investigated extensively:

  • No active Claude sessions
  • claude agents --json --all shows no long-running sessions
  • /usage reports 8+ hour subagent-heavy sessions
  • Current session shows zero token usage
  • Windows Task Manager shows no abnormal CPU or network activity

I also contacted AI support, but it could not verify any server-side sessions and suggested this requires investigation of backend logs.

This appears to be a server-side usage accounting or cloud session lifecycle issue rather than a local configuration problem.

Can confirm.

Adding related Billing Platform / cost-control context from a separate unresolved paid Claude billing case, kept public-safe.

This thread is important because it reports paid Max usage being consumed while the account appears idle, with no corresponding visible activity log and multiple users describing the same "phantom usage" shape. Related public reports in the same Anthropic-owned tracker include:

My direct case is a different billing surface: manual prepaid / bulk Claude usage-credit purchases fail or fail to commit cleanly, while automatic usage-credit reloads on the same paid billing setup continue charging successfully. The useful shared boundary is that paid account state, usage-credit / quota state, visible activity logs, auto-reload/payment events, and support routing do not reconcile cleanly.

Requested triage path: please route this class of reports to a human Billing Platform / cost-control / agent-runtime owner who can inspect server-side session lifecycle, account activity logs, token attribution, quota/credit debits, auto-reload triggers, phantom or orphaned work, and credit/cap restoration policy together. Generic client-side logout/reinstall/card-decline guidance cannot diagnose an account whose usage moves while the user sees no matching activity.

Concrete asks that would help paid users:

  • per-session and per-surface usage attribution visible to the customer;
  • a server-side "revoke/stop all active sessions and agents" control with proof that nothing remains running;
  • mismatch alerts when quota moves but no user-visible activity entry exists;
  • a written credit/cap restoration path for confirmed phantom usage or product/runtime loops;
  • a support route that reaches a human Billing Platform / payment-operations owner instead of Fin loops.

Public, privacy-sanitized evidence hub for the broader manual-credit, auto-reload, entitlement-routing, quota-meter, and support-routing pattern:

I am intentionally not posting card details, bank names, private payment IDs, invoice IDs, support IDs, raw logs, screenshots, payment URLs, one-time codes, private support-thread text, tokens, or private account identifiers here.

I've had a similar experience in the last ~6 hours where my usage drained to 100% although i had only 5% of my session utilisation and had barely started using the weeks allocation.

Same here https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/81684

And technical support isn't responding!
It's outrageous to pay so much for a service and get no support.
