What's Wrong?

Summary

I attended Code w/ Claude London (May 20, 2026), where Boris Cherny announced all attendees would receive 3 months of Claude Max 20x. I redeemed the offer successfully, and on the same day cancelled my own pre-existing Pro subscription so I wouldn't be double-billed alongside the gift. One month later, on June 28 — with no further action on my part — the gift was auto-cancelled instead of running its full 3 months. Two months of the promotional credit remain unrestored. Multiple contacts with support (chat and email) have not resolved this.

Nothing in the promo terms states the gift requires an active paid plan underneath it, or that cancelling one's own subscription forfeits the remaining credit. The gift simply lapsed after 1 month instead of 3, consistent with the gift/Stripe backend bugs reported in #48399, #52073, #51168, and #56338.

Timeline

  1. May 20: Attended Code w/ Claude London
  2. May 27:
  • Received official promo email from Anthropic Events <no-reply@mail.anthropic.com> and redeemed the 3-month Max 20x offer → promo period should run through ~Aug 28, 2026.
  • I cancelled my remaining Pro subscription (−£17.06 proration refund, £0 invoice) to avoid being double-billed on the old plan alongside the gift
  1. Jun 28: Exactly one month after redemption, the Max 20x gift was auto-cancelled and the account reverted. I re-subscribed to Pro monthly (£18, paid, invoice available) the same day to keep working
  2. Since then: Contacted support via chat and email multiple times, no resolution

Key evidence of backend malfunction

The gift terminated after 1 month despite being granted for 3. The promo terms state the account "will automatically revert to your previous plan" only "after the 3-month promotional period". I made no plan changes between redemption and the Jun 28 auto-cancellation — my only action (cancelling my own Pro subscription) happened on redemption day itself, and nothing in the terms states the gift requires an active paid plan underneath it or is forfeited when the user's own subscription ends.

The gift never appeared in my billing/invoice history at all. My invoices show only my own Pro payments/refunds. The Max 20x gift has no corresponding subscription object or invoice line — suggesting it was provisioned as a credit layered on my existing Stripe subscription rather than as an independent object, consistent with #56338. If so, cancelling the underlying subscription would have silently stopped the monthly credit from renewing for months 2 and 3 — a forfeiture that appears nowhere in the offer terms.

The "revert to your previous plan" logic had no valid target. My previous plan was already cancelled, so at the 1-month mark the system reverted me to nothing (Free) and destroyed the remaining credit, rather than continuing the promo through month 3.

I have the original confirmation email from the Anthropic Events team and screenshots of my full invoice history, and can provide them to whoever triages this.

What Should Happen?

The Max 20x gift remains active for the full 3 months (through ~Aug 28, 2026); or the remaining ~2 months of Max 20x credit is restored/re-applied to my account, per the terms ("Redemption is limited to 12 months of Claude Max 20x credit applied to your account at one time").

  2. Redeem the Code w/ Claude 3-month Max 20x promo code
  3. Cancel the pre-existing Pro subscription the same day
  4. Wait one month → the gift auto-cancels at the 1-month mark instead of running 3 months

Note: this is a billing/backend issue tied to account state, not reproducible via the CLI.
