[BUG] Magic-link login returns “can’t verify email” error on desktop app and web — distinct from onboarding redirect issues, 1+ month unresolved
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Note: This does NOT appear to be the same issue as #60022, #57164, #36797, #39788, or #22685. Those issues describe users being redirected to an onboarding flow. This issue produces a verification failure error after clicking the magic link, with no redirect to onboarding. This appears to be a distinct failure mode of the same auth system.

Summary
Magic-link email login has been completely broken for 1+ month across both the Claude Desktop app (Windows) and claude.ai in browser. The only working access is via the Claude mobile app. Anthropic support has not provided a human response.
---
Environment
OS: Windows 10/11
Desktop App: Claude for Windows (AppData\Roaming\Claude)
Browser: Multiple tested
Account type: Pro
Issue duration: ~1.5 months (began approximately beginning May 2026)
---
Behavior
Issue appeared for first time after downloading and attempting to log in to desktop app for first time
Enter email on desktop app or browser login screen
Magic link email is received successfully
Click link — receive error stating identity/email cannot be verified
Side effect: Every failed desktop app login attempt also breaks browser session on the same machine
Clearing browser cache restores browser access temporarily
Clearing AppData\Roaming\Claude entirely (all subfolders and files) does not resolve desktop app issue
Browser access has now also become persistently broken
Mobile app (same account, same email) works without issue
---
What I’ve tried
Deleted entire AppData\Roaming\Claude directory
Cleared browser cache and cookies (temporary fix for browser only)
Tried multiple browsers
No VPN or proxy in use
Confirmed magic link is being opened on the same device it was requested from
Uninstalled Claude Desktop app and Claude Code completely
Searched entire C drive and deleted every file and folder referencing “Claude” or “Anthropic”
Rebooted machine after full removal
Issue persists unchanged after all of the above
---
Support history
Contacted Fin (support.claude.com) — repeated basic troubleshooting, no escalation
Emailed support@anthropic.com — no human response received
Issue has persisted unresolved for 1+ months with no human response from Anthropic support
---
Notes
Per issue #60022, this appears to be a server-side backend identity-mapping failure, not a client-side issue. Standard self-service troubleshooting does not apply. Requesting engineer review and human support escalation.
Not willing to share email address publicly. I will send a message to Anthropic support referencing this issue number after it's created.

Additionally, cannot cancel subscription from ios app as it requires cancellation to be done from the same platform it was purchased on (would have already cancelled otherwise).
I hit the identical "We were unable to verify you with this link" error triggering Claude Code login from the VS Code extension. In my case it was not purely server-side, so flagging it in case it helps narrow the cause:
I was already logged into claude.ai normally in the same browser (Firefox, Linux) — active session, confirmed.
The Claude Code OAuth authorize page returned "Sign in again to continue" (recent-sign-in step-up). Requesting the magic-link email and opening the link in the same browser window produced the "unable to verify" error.
Fix: I opened the same login flow in a Firefox private window (extensions disabled, clean cookies) and it verified successfully on the first try. I re-ran the VS Code auth afterward and it completed.
The magic-link page verifies its token from the URL fragment (#…) via client-side JS, so this points to a local interference cause — a browser extension, tracking protection, or a stale/corrupt claude.ai cookie — rather than the backend identity-mapping failure described above.
Suggest that the same error string may cover at least two distinct causes: (1) a self-fixable client-side one (extension/cookie), and (2) the server-side one reported here. Worth adding "try a private/incognito window with extensions off" as a first triage step before escalation.
Essentially the same problem on macOS. I get 'logged out' mid session and fall into this endless loop.
Had long discussion with Claude.ai went through all the hoops mentioned above to no avail.
What eventually worked:
After clearing all cookies, local storage, etc.
Open Claude Code answer onboarding questions
When browser opens close/ignore that window
Open a new private window and paste URL from Claude Code
Email is received, Copy link.
Open new private window and paste link from email
An auth code is presented, paste this into Claude Code
I had previously used a private window and pasted the URL from Claude Code. Then I clicked the link (button) in the email and that opened a 'normal' window and failed. The successful attempt used a second private window.
However, the expected login flow worked as expected multiple times in the past with the same environment, browser, extensions, etc. The only changes between working and non-working logins that I'm aware of have been routine OS, browser and Claude Code updates.
My environment:
Claude Code: 2.1.207
macOS: 15.7.8
Browser: Firefox 152.0.5
Extensions: Privacy Badger, Ghostery, Dark Reader and others not likely related.
VPN: Cloudflare Warp 2026.6.822.0
