No matter what prompt i provide, i get the following response

+1 this is now happening to my team as well, I'm pinned to 2.0.76 with all autoupdates disabled.

I've tried swapping models between claude-opus-4-6, claude-opus-4-6[1m], and claude-opus-4-5 and the failure persists on all of them, 100% of the time.

To be clear: this is resulting in complete, 100% failure on every request. Claude Code is currently completely broken and unusable.

Workaround: logout then re login. Suspicious if this had something to do with the auth/token store.

I logged out and re-logged in again. did not work. Rebooted my machine. Did not work.

The Claude desktop works. Browser based claude.ai works.

Awesome! So the whole problem was just a bug in v2.0.76 — the effortLevel null crash. You were stuck on the old version because /usr/local/bin/claude was shadowing the npm-global installation.

The root cause was Claude Code v2.0.76 had a bug (null effortLevel crash). You were stuck on that old version because npm install -g was putting the new binary in ~/.npm-global/bin/ but your PATH was picking up the stale /usr/local/bin/claude first.
If it ever gets stuck on an old version again, just check which claude vs npm root -g to make sure they match.
