What's Wrong?

I'm experiencing persistent performance issues with the Claude desktop app on Windows 11.

My setup:

  • Laptop: HP OMEN Transcend 14 (14-fb1xxx)
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra
  • GPU 1: Intel Arc 140T (16GB) — this is what the app uses
  • GPU 2: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop
  • RAM: 32GB
  • OS: Windows 11

The issue: The Claude desktop app runs slowly and feels unresponsive at times. After investigating, I found that the app always runs on the Intel Arc GPU and ignores the Nvidia GPU, even after configuring it in both Windows Graphics Settings and the Nvidia Control Panel.

This laptop does not have a MUX switch, so there is no way to force the dedicated GPU system-wide. However, other Electron-based apps can be directed to use the preferred GPU. The Claude app, being installed via the Microsoft Store, seems to ignore these settings entirely.

I've already tried:

  • Assigning the app to High Performance GPU in Windows Graphics Settings
  • Setting preferred GPU in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Reinstalling the app
  • Updating Intel Arc drivers to the latest version (32.0.101.8724)

None of these fixed the issue. The app continues to use the Intel Arc GPU regardless.

This seems like something that would need to be addressed on your end, either by adjusting how the app handles GPU selection or by providing an alternative installation method outside the Microsoft Store.

What Should Happen?
