[BUG] HRESULT 0x80073CF6" and "process exited with code 1
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Issue: Claude Code process crashes with exit code 1 after recent update
Environment:
- OS: Windows 11, Build 10.0.26200.8246
- Claude Desktop / Claude Code version: 2.1.117
- Architecture: x64
Summary:
After a recent update to Claude Desktop, Claude Code sessions crash with the error "Claude Code process exited with code 1." The issue started immediately after the update — prior versions worked without any problems.
What I tried:
- Fully uninstalled the app (including AppX packages and local AppData folders)
- Restarted the system
- Reinstalled the latest version from claude.ai/download
Installation error during reinstall:
During reinstallation, the installer failed with:Installation failed: AddPackage failed: AddPackage failed with HRESULT 0x80073CF6
The installer then offered an "install without Cowork" option, which completed successfully. However, the original crash issue ("Claude Code process exited with code 1") still occurs after this clean install.
Reproduction:
- Open Claude Desktop
- Go to the Code tab
- Open any project folder via "Select folder"
- The process crashes with exit code 1 (occurs consistently across multiple projects)
Additional notes:
- My local user data at
C:\Users\<user>\.claude\projects\is intact (40+ project session histories preserved) - After reinstall, the Projects list in the Code tab appears empty until folders are manually re-selected
- The crash happens regardless of which project I open
- Terminal CLI (
claudecommand) works fine — issue appears specific to the desktop app's Code tab
Log file:
I have the full ClaudeSetup.log from the failed installation attempt (showing the HRESULT 0x80073CF6 error during AddPackage). Happy to share it if needed.
This is blocking my daily workflow across multiple active projects. Any guidance or a fix would be greatly appreciated.
