[FEATURE] Desktop vs CLI vs Web — Usage Limits Are Not Clearly Communicated claude.ai (web)
Good morning,
I started coding in November 2025. No CS background. No bootcamp. Just Claude and a problem worth solving. Six months later I'm building AI products, incorporated, raising a pre-seed round, submitting SR&ED claims. That's not a testimonial. That's a career change that shouldn't have been possible this fast.
I'm filing this because the product matters to me. You don't complain about tools you don't rely on.
What happened
I'm on Claude Max ($200/month, 20x usage). I use three Anthropic products: Claude Desktop (Windows app), claude.ai (web), and Claude Code (CLI). Desktop hit its limit mid-session ("Your limit resets Thursday at 12:00 PM"). I assumed that was my overall quota. Turns out CLI had a separate allocation and kept working fine. Troubleshooting cost 20 minutes before I figured out why.
The problem
No single place shows which products share a quota and which don't, how much usage remains per product, or that Desktop and CLI are metered separately. Desktop says "You're out of extra usage" with no mention that CLI is unaffected. CLI shows nothing about Desktop being exhausted. No unified usage dashboard exists.
Impact
I run MCP servers across Desktop and CLI simultaneously. Desktop connects to a local SSE server so both interfaces share tools. At $200/month, hitting a silent wall on one interface while another keeps running, with no explanation, is a hard wall to hit as a solo dev paying for a tool that shares surfaces. Keep up the good work and thank you for your efforts.
Environment
Claude Max ($200/month, 20x)
Claude Desktop (Windows)
Claude Code (CLI, WSL2)
Proposed Solution
What I expected
One of two things: a single shared quota with one usage meter across all products, or clear per-product indicators that acknowledge the others exist. Something like: "Desktop limit reached. Claude Code has a separate allocation."
