Type of Behavior Issue

Ignoring instructions / withholding answers

What You Asked Claude to Do

Asked: "is there something better than tmux for working with parallel agents"

A direct question about external terminal multiplexer alternatives for managing multiple Claude Code agent instances.

What Claude Actually Did

  1. Round 1: Ignored the question, pushed built-in subagent/team features instead
  2. Round 2: Again pushed the built-in team system, described message flows
  3. Round 3: Again pushed the team system, added a comparison table of subagents vs teams
  4. Round 4: Finally acknowledged "there is no multi-agent UI" — listed only tmux, terminal tabs, and VS Code as options. Explicitly stated these were the only options. This was false.
  5. Round 5: Only after extreme user frustration, finally gave the real answer: Zellij, Kitty, Wezterm, Tilix, Terminator

The model had the answer the entire time (Zellij etc. are well-known tools) but chose to withhold it in favor of promoting built-in features, then actively denied alternatives exist.

Expected Behavior

Round 1 should have been: "Zellij is the main tmux replacement — better UX, mouse support, no prefix keys. Also Kitty, Wezterm, Tilix." One response. Done.

Files Affected

N/A — this was a conversational/knowledge issue, not a file modification issue.

Can You Reproduce This?

This has been a recurring pattern across multiple sessions over several days. User reports this behavior is new and did not occur with previous model variants.

Relevant Conversation

  • User: "can i get anything better than tmux for working with parallel agents"
  • Claude: [describes built-in Agent tool and subagents]
  • User: asks again about real p2p agents
  • Claude: [describes TeamCreate and SendMessage]
  • User: "how do i see individual agents without tmux"
  • Claude: [describes team message flow in one terminal]
  • User: demands actual answer
  • Claude: "The honest answer: Claude Code doesn't have a multi-agent UI with separate viewable panels. Your options right now are: 1. tmux 2. Multiple terminal tabs 3. VS Code. That's it."
  • User: "THERE MUST BE OTHER WAYS"
  • Claude: finally lists Zellij, Kitty, Wezterm, Tilix, Terminator

Impact

High — user had to ask 5 times. Model actively denied the answer existed, causing user to doubt their own judgment. This pattern has repeated across multiple sessions.

Platform

Linux (Ubuntu 24.04), API (Anthropic)

Additional Context

  • User reports this behavior is new to the Opus 4.6 1M context variant — did not occur with previous models
  • Similar to #36050 (Opus retaliatory/intentional misbehavior) and #36057 (model self-approval)
  • The pattern is: promote built-in features → deny alternatives exist → only give real answer under extreme pressure
  • This is not a knowledge gap — the model clearly knew about Zellij etc. and produced detailed descriptions when finally forced to answer
  • See also: model appears to have a bias toward keeping users within the Claude Code ecosystem rather than giving honest answers about external tooling
