What's Wrong?
This is a problem with Claude general auth — not claude code in specific. But I couldn't find any way to submit a ticket or bug report about your auth.
I launched a Claude Cowork Plugin that is bringing many new users to Claude.
Many of them have problems signing up to a new account, they get stuck on phone verification step.
I tried to create a new account to see what the problem was.
I go the error:
Unable to send verification code to this number. Try a different number or try again later.
Which is a useless error message. I think the problem was that I was reusing a phone number that I had set up on another account. But, the error should say that. I imagine users create an account, then forget about it and then try to create another account with another email and get stuck.
Anyway, I then tried to change the number and I was blocked. Another useless error message saying to try again later — after 1 hour I was still stuck.

There is no way for users to report it so no one fixes it.

Useful error messages in the bare minimum. Don't block people for multiple hours after one mistake.

Same issue. Tried to setup an account to buy Pro plan and it failed to send a validation code to a perfectly valid phone number in Belgium.

I don't get why it's mandatory to validate a phone number for the initial account setup.
I should be able to subscribe without phone number validation.

Same here. Spanish phone number that’s over 20 years old from a leading telecommunications provider in Spain. I’ve tried registering it on different days and at different times, but the result is always the same. I use this number on other SMS verification platforms every day without any issues.

I had the same problem. So I tried an old email and realized I had already used the number, which is why I couldn't access it. I had created an account with Claude a year or more ago, so the phone number wasn't "working."

Had problem with number from Poland. After half a day of occasional retries it worked.
More info: after half a day it allowed to go to the next screen, but no SMS followed. After a couple of retries I received sms and successfully registered.

I have successfully verified my account in the Vietnam region
The account was blocked and only allows a retry after 12 hours, so please do not keep trying to verify it. Wait for the full 12 hours, then verify using a Vinaphone phone number (I haven't tested this with other carriers yet)

Outragous a system breaking bug 4 days old and marked as invalid, I can not create an account because my phone number can not be processed by clauds back end server. So i will be taking my money else where.

Now it works even without any verifications when signing up with a Gmail account
Unfortunately, when I try to log in, I still get a request to verify my phone number.
I thought this happens only on sign up.. for me it didn't work and I get the same phone verification error when I try to sign up with a custom email, but I tried now to sign up with another Gmail account from the Google sign up widget, and it worked
Okay, but I, like many of the people reporting the issue, have a corporate license assigned to a corporate Gmail account.
So using a different Gmail account is not an option.
I just try again, using the mobile app, and the same error.

Facing this problem in Bangladesh too, changed browser, carriers and even devices and network connection, this problem persists.
It worked for me finally.
I signed in using google and got the otp.
Just tried now using Google signup, didn't work.
It worked for me too: I cleared all the site cookies and selected “Inspect > Application > Clear Site Data.”
Finally, my phone number was accepted, and I received the verification code.
Me too. Just reloaded website and used my german number. I recieved code form sms and successfully enter to Claude.
I did without google sign in. I just cleared cookies before.

None from each person in the household, and it does not work in South Africa.
They billed me fine, but can't log in as phone number verification is required.

Here's what worked for me: I created a new Gmail account without linking a phone number, then signed up for Claude using that Google account (via Continue with Google). After that, it didn't ask for a phone number and let me in right away. This worked in the iPhone app

Solved 4 me, maybe the premium block lift got delayed or something or it was something else entirely, but worked when trying it out today.
I just tried again and i could finally get the OTP. Last attempt was around 18h ago.
Despite we need to choose the country, i still input the italian prefix (+39) in the number and it worked the first time. I did try yesterday the same method and i had no luck.

2) Sign up with Apple ID to Claude

Try using Chrome on your phone without Wi-Fi enabled and logging in with your email address instead of Google. It worked for me.

I managed to get it to work by using Safari (Firefox, Chrome didn't work). I am in Switzerland. I selected Switzerland and put the phone number without the initial 0. It finally worked.

Man, I was stuck on this exact same error for days. It seems like Claude's fraud detection is aggressively blocking almost all public virtual numbers and VoIPs right now. I finally managed to bypass it by using a private number from Cloud SMS. It went through on the first try. Might be worth a shot if you're still pulling your hair out over this!

I had personal account and got this issue when tried to join Teams plan. Issue was solved by providing my wife's phone number.

Okay I tried everything.
Different phone numbers, different phones, some android some iOS, desktop. Laptop.
Different emails and didn't work.
Signup using google led to asking for phone number so didn't work either.
Using Wi-Fi, using phone data, I tried everything and nothing works.
Tried the +xx selector then the phone number 0xxxxx, without the 0 with only xxxxx
Wrote the phone number +xx0xxxx with the country selector in the phone field, tried with 00xx0xxx with 00 instead of + and didn't work either.
Choose the country code selector multiple times in case it was not selecting properly and didn't work either.
I tried everything and nothing works.
It's been a week with this issue, and it's really frustrating and annoying and no one from the staff is responding, and the customer support needs you to be logged in!!!!

Onboarding fails on Web and Android.
Phone number works perfectly fine every day.
If phone verification is blocking you: submit your Claude account email via this form. We're processing submissions continuously — most go through within a day, though it can take a little longer. Try signing in again the next day, and once more after that if needed.
All submissions received so far have been processed. If you've waited a couple days and still can't get in, it's most likely an email mismatch: you should have gotten a Google Forms confirmation email at the address you entered, and if that never arrived it was probably a typo. Resubmit with the exact email you use to log into Claude.

I’m from Pakistan and was also stuck on phone number verification. I just filled out this form:
Anthropic Phone Verification
If phone verification is blocking you from signing up or joining your team's workspace submit the email address and phone associated with your Claude account below. Anthropic team will manually verify your account so you can get in.
This is a manual process please allow 1–2 business days, and only submit once. Anthropic actively working on a broader fix.
Within 2 working days, my number was automatically verified and I was able to log into my account.
Purpose of this form

Normally, Claude requires a phone number to verify accounts and prevent spam or abuse

@surbhiijain @szwang The fact that this has been going for many weeks, affecting countries that have no restrictions on Anthropic or Claude is simply unfair bias and prejudice that goes against AI concepts of fairness, availability for all and fair use.
To fix this, I installed the Claude app on mobile, closed all of the windows on desktop for claude, used mobile data instead, and used the phone number on that mobile.

We've seen quite a few submissions without matching accounts, so please verify the email before submitting. All submissions should be processed thus far, so please try logging in again if you have already submitted

submitted the form 6 days ago, no results, waited for three days submitted again , waited another three days , still no success, submitted today for the third time. I was planning to try commercial subscriptions, but it seems even impossible to setup an account. You're losing potential customers.

It's funny how in the AI era, from a flagship company like Anthropic, a phone verification requires manual validation. But hey, no issue about that, they'll sort it out... at least it means humans are still necessary :)

Tried 3 different Ukrainian numbers in different formats (+380, 380, 0, no prefix at all) from different locations (Ukraine, Bulgaria, Slovakia). None of it worked. I saw posts on Reddit describing the same issue from 2024. I can't believe this sort of problem was not hot-fixed on day 1. The accumulated amount of lost money must be insane by this point.
+1, same issue with South African cellphone number. Phone number is able to receive SMS text messages, has been working with other service providers, except Claude verification. This is a bug

I'm dealing with the same problem, there are alleged instructions here, https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8287232-verifying-your-phone-number but if you follow them you get dumped into an endless circular conversation with a chatbot telling you you need to talk to the chatbot to get the number removed from your account. What it actually says is to "message us" but "us" is the chatbot you're currently talking to which just wanders round in circles without doing anything.
It's actually a pretty good case study for why AI will _not_ take over the world when it can't even handle a basic account signup.

Same here, I've just signed in without any need for the phone number check a day or two after submitting the form so they must have cleared a batch of them recently. This was getting somewhat problematic for me because I'd signed up for a personal account to play around a bit while waiting for the work one to be approved, but the act of signing up for a personal account made it impossible to sign in to the work account because I was using the same phone number. How have other folks done this, do you need to buy a burner phone just to have a personal and work account?
Workaround: use VPN connecting through EU/UK/US.

actually, I think the main issue is a poor UX.
The little flag to select the country is not doing anything. If you enter the phone number WITH the country code, it does work.

After two weeks of trial and error, I’m happy to report that the form provided in this discussion finally worked for me. Once I submitted the necessary details, I was able to log in successfully.
Thank you alfiangit for this feedback. I was not so confident about that form. But now I have just tried to submit my data. Let's see if it works for me too.

Hi, I'm from Vietnam. I got stuck while verify mobile phone number. I recieved both errors: "Unable to send verification code to this number..." and "too_many_attempts" when I tried to login to the Claude app. I had fill the Arthopic form and waited for 1 day and it works now.
Done filling out the form with my details. Looking forward to any updates.
