Claude provides MCP configuration instructions for wrong context (CLI vs Desktop app)

Resolved 💬 4 comments Opened Feb 21, 2026 by thefinitemonkey Closed Mar 22, 2026

When asked how to enable an MCP server integration (e.g. Jira) while running inside the Claude Desktop application, Claude provided configuration instructions targeting ~/.claude/settings.json (the CLI config file) rather than ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json (the Desktop app config). Claude lacked awareness of which execution context it was running in, causing the user to configure the wrong location and the MCP server to not appear in the Desktop session.

Expected behavior: Claude should detect or infer whether it is running in the CLI or Desktop app context, and provide the correct configuration path accordingly (or at minimum clarify that the two contexts use separate MCP configurations).

Platform: macOS
