What's Wrong?

Bug Report: Memory System Incorrectly Reports MEMORY.md as Empty

Environment

  • Version: Claude Code v2.1.42 (latest)
  • Platform: Windows 11 Pro 10.0.22621
  • Shell: bash (Git Bash/MSYS)
  • Project: C:\Users\ikayj\Documents\webprojects\wingside

Description

The auto-generated system reminder incorrectly reports that MEMORY.md is empty when it actually contains substantial content (11.8KB, 364 lines).

System Reminder Message (Incorrect)

## MEMORY.md

Your MEMORY.md is currently empty. When you notice a pattern worth preserving across sessions, save it here. Anything in MEMORY.md will be included in your system prompt next time.

Actual File State

$ ls -la /c/Users/ikayj/.claude/projects/C--Users-ikayj-Documents-webprojects-wingside/memory/MEMORY.md
-rw-r--r-- 1 ikayj 197609 11817 Feb 14 16:25 MEMORY.md

$ wc -l MEMORY.md
364 MEMORY.md

$ file MEMORY.md
MEMORY.md: JavaScript source, Unicode text, UTF-8 text

Memory Directory Contents

The memory directory contains multiple well-populated files:

  • MEMORY.md (11.8KB) - Main index with critical patterns
  • technical-standards.md (35KB)
  • payment-gateways.md (12KB)
  • api-endpoints.md (14KB)
  • features.md (18KB)
  • permissions.md (16KB)
  • environment-config.md (8KB)
  • testing-checklist.md (10KB)

Expected Behavior

The system reminder should either:

  1. Show accurate file status (e.g., "Your MEMORY.md has 364 lines")
  2. Not display the reminder if the file is populated
  3. Show a summary of what's in memory

Actual Behavior

System reminder claims MEMORY.md is empty despite containing 11.8KB of content.

Impact

  • Confusing for users who have saved memory content
  • User may incorrectly believe memory system isn't working
  • May lead to unnecessary re-creation of memory files

Reproduction

  1. Create and populate MEMORY.md in Claude Code memory directory
  2. Save substantial content to the file
  3. Start a new Claude Code session
  4. Observe system reminder incorrectly reports file as empty

Additional Context

  • File encoding: UTF-8
  • File format: Valid markdown
  • File permissions: Read/write enabled
  • The memory system itself is working correctly - files are being read in sessions
  • Only the status message in the system reminder is incorrect

Workaround

Ignore the incorrect system reminder - the memory system is functioning properly despite the incorrect status message.

Request

Please fix the logic that generates the memory status in system reminders to accurately reflect the actual file state.
