[BUG] Opus 4.6 Autocompacts so often it's making claude code unusable

What's Wrong?

Since Wednesday, my CC has been autocompacting like crazy, to the point where it can't even make a single plan without compacting. Like, I say "do X" in plan mode, and it's compacting before it can even make a plan. It's creating nightmares where the plans are slop since it doesn't have enough context. I am hitting auto-compact after 2.5 min of usage on a clean CC instance.

What Should Happen?

Don't autocomact so often. When Opus 4.6 first came out, I was NOT having these issues. I first experienced this auto-compact issue on Wednesday (Feb 11).

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open claude code
  2. Set to plan mode
  3. Ask it to generate a plan for anything:
  • Implement a new feature
  • Design a system to handle X
  • Investigate why I have this bug
  1. Wait for claude code to auto-compact before the plan is even made
