[BUG] "Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard" is not recognized by Claude Code

Resolved 💬 3 comments Opened Jan 22, 2026 by alexbw Closed Jan 26, 2026

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

When I try to copy/paste an image into the Claude Code command line, it does not recognize it. For instance, I have the action "Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard" in Mac OS 15.2 mapped to a keyboard shortcut, which places an image on the copy/paste buffer. Pasting into Claude Code doesn't work, but for example pasting into Obsidian or other apps does. However, if I save the file with Preview, and then copy the file (just click on the file, cmd+c), that is pasteable into Claude Code. It just takes a few extra steps and adds friction.

What Should Happen?

I should be able to copy an image data directly (not an image file in Finder), either via selection and cmd+c, or by invocation of "Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard", and then I should be able to paste that directly into Claude Code and have it recognize it as an image.
