Feature Request: India-Specific Pricing Plans (INR) for Claude & Claude Code
Summary
Request for Anthropic to introduce India-specific pricing plans in INR (Indian Rupees) for Claude Pro and Claude Code subscriptions, similar to what OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google (Gemini) already offer.
Problem
Currently, Claude subscriptions are only available in USD, which creates significant barriers for Indian users:
- Currency conversion costs: Indians pay in INR but are charged in USD, incurring forex conversion fees (2-3%)
- GST on international transactions: 18% GST is added to foreign currency transactions
- Effective cost is much higher: Claude Pro ($20) becomes ~₹2,000+ after conversion and taxes
- No UPI support: India's most popular payment method isn't supported
- No localized payment options: No support for Indian payment gateways
Competitor Comparison (India Pricing)
| Service | India Price (INR/month) | Special Offers |
|---------|-------------------------|----------------|
| ChatGPT Go | ₹399 | First year FREE for Indians |
| ChatGPT Plus | ₹1,999 | Localized pricing |
| Gemini AI Plus | ₹199 (intro) → ₹399 | 6-month intro pricing |
| Gemini AI Pro | ₹1,950 | Free 1 year for college students |
| Claude Pro | ~₹2,000+ (USD converted) | No localized pricing |
Both OpenAI and Google have recognized India as a major market and introduced:
- INR pricing
- UPI payment support
- Student/promotional offers
- Partnerships with Indian telcos (e.g., Jio)
Proposed Solution
- Introduce INR pricing for Claude Pro and Claude Max plans
- Add UPI as a payment option (used by 300M+ Indians)
- Consider competitive pricing:
- Claude Pro: ₹999-1,499/month (to compete with ChatGPT Go at ₹399)
- Claude Max: ₹4,999-7,999/month
- Student discounts for Indian college students
- Partner with Indian payment gateways (Razorpay, Paytm, PhonePe)
Why This Matters
- India has 900M+ internet users - one of the largest potential markets
- Growing developer community - India produces the most developers globally
- AI adoption is accelerating - but cost is a major barrier
- Competitors are winning - ChatGPT and Gemini are capturing the Indian market with localized pricing
- Claude Code specifically - developers need affordable access to use Claude Code for their work
Current Pain Points (User Perspective)
"To use Claude Code we need a subscription and if it's in dollars and including GST it's very expensive for Indians who make money in INR unless provided by a corporate."
This sentiment is common among Indian developers and professionals who want to use Claude but find the pricing prohibitive compared to alternatives.
Business Case
- India's AI market is projected to reach $17B by 2027
- Localized pricing typically increases adoption 3-5x in emerging markets
- First-mover advantage in localized pricing builds brand loyalty
- Enterprise adoption in India often starts with individual developers
Additional Context
Countries like Brazil, Indonesia, and other emerging markets would also benefit from similar localized pricing strategies.

Please claude. Stop the currency conversion cost at the very least
Thanks for the request @saidev-pbi-fabric
This would be a great option.
Meanwhile, if you have a forex free card, I’d recommend using it and picking a US pin code that doesn’t have any sales tax.

Claude is better to ChatGPT/Gemini for the complex strategic analysis I need in my work, but at ₹2,000+/month (after conversion + GST) vs their ₹399-1,950 localized pricing, it's impossible to justify to my company - even when I see the clear value difference.
INR pricing and UPI support would make this a no-brainer business decision instead of a budget battle.
Why is claude cheaper if I buy it through the andoid app, only 1999 debited. Is there any difference?
They have kept it cheaper on app and play store. People can buy from those stores for now until web option also follows.
Is there any difference in any part of the feature or usability?

Hi Team Claude, I hope you are doing well. I wanted to kindly ask if there are any plans to introduce India-based pricing for Claude. India represents a large and growing market, and many of us here would greatly appreciate localized pricing and billing options in INR.
If possible, it would be wonderful if you could also consider opening an office in India, registering an Indian entity, and enabling invoicing directly from India. This would make it much easier and more affordable for individuals and businesses here to use Claude.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and for all the work you do on this amazing product.
Anthropic has already opened office In India and started hiring, will introduce India based pricing!

I am not here to simply +1 this, but I will address it properly. I wish not to get any freebies, as in the end Anthropic has to make money.
Simply put, having the $20 USD plan priced at ~Rs. 1,800 should suffice. I value this service, and paying for it is perfectly fine by me. Just having options beyond USD would be great.
Not everybody in India has a Visa or Mastercard either. A simple RuPay debit card option would be awesome. Maybe a credits system could also be implemented. Though, your end goal should be implementing UPI.
Maybe, give a 15 day free trial (with KYC/Verification). The market is quite big, and flexibility only helps.
+1
+1
Genuinely confused about the downvotes. Was my comment off-topic or did I say something that came across wrong?
To be clear, I'm not against free trials... that's standard practice. I just don't personally need them to decide if something's worth buying. The KYC thing is just to stop people from abusing it with multiple accounts.
If I missed the point of the discussion or suggested something that doesn't make sense, let me know.

To determine a "Fair Premium Price" for Claude in India, we must balance the low-cost benchmarks (like Grok and Spotify) against the high-compute reality of a top-tier AI model.
Since Anthropic is a "premium" service with higher "thinking" costs (Reasoning models), a fair price shouldn't be as low as a music app, but it shouldn't be 5x the US cost either.
The "Fair Premium" Calculation
Proposed Fair Pricing for Claude (India)
| Tier | Global Price | Current India Price (Approx.) | Proposed Fair Price (INR) | Why this works? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20 | ~₹1,999 | ₹899 – ₹999 | Aligns with Netflix Premium or 2x SuperGrok. Sustainable but accessible. |
| Max 5x | $100 | ~₹10,000 | ₹3,499 – ₹3,999 | Competitive with X Premium+; covers the heavy GPU usage for power users. |
| Max 20x | $200 | ~₹20,000 | ₹6,999 – ₹7,499 | High enough to prevent loss-leading, low enough for Indian solo devs. |
------------------------------
Justification for the "Fair" Middle Ground
Your reasoning seems fair. Considering PPP adjustments, competitor pricing, and the fact that Anthropic is currently leading in model quality (especially for coding and reasoning), a fair regional price for Claude Pro in India would likely fall somewhere around ₹1000-₹1200.
That range keeps it clearly positioned as a "premium product", but still makes it significantly more accessible for Indian developers and students compared to the current pricing. It also stays well above the raw PPP equivalent, which helps account for the higher compute costs of advanced reasoning models.
Overall, that band feels like a reasonable middle ground between affordability and sustainability.
No, don't go as high as Rs. 999 either. I'm good with the current pricing
of ChatGPT Go (399). So if you want to include a tier with ads, this is the
price point to compete with

+1, hate how claude translates to ~22k INR (plus forex charges) while Codex is 20k (no forex charges)
I don't mind PPP conversions, just Indian billing :'(
Until Anthropic introduces regional pricing, here are some strategies for making Claude Code more cost-effective from India:
Full pricing comparison across all access methods: https://github.com/Sagargupta16/claude-cost-optimizer/blob/main/guides/06-access-methods-pricing.md
There is already a regional pricing introduced by claude because when you
buy the subscription from your Android phone and through the play store you
get it for 1999, but for claude max doesn't have that regional pricing even
in Play Store.

Your entire claude code optimizer and guides are really documented well with proper logic for understanding. Obviously a little terse (but valuable) for some and potentially deterrant - but full of instructions to optimize costs for each and every action with examples. It might take some time to practice all the valuable suggestions, but worth it.
Perhaps, someday Claude itself will be able to optimize it's usage inferring from logic / code and intended usage and operation.
Good point @kaustubhshukla9586 -- Play Store regional pricing at INR 1999 for Pro is significant. That is roughly \4 vs the direct \0 (factoring in forex), so it is close but at least billed in INR without forex charges. Hopefully Max plans get the same treatment.
@rajtan thanks for the kind words on the cost optimizer\! The guides are intentionally dense to be a reference you come back to rather than a one-time read.
Much needed request.. Please Claude, make India Specific pricing plan. Using you the beast (which I can blindly use for any agenting coding) now since 8 months.. I have started using 100$ Plan since August,2025 and everytime it costs me 118$ with (+18$ as GST). Moreover, the currency conversion charges,,, Please claude a humble request to think about thh pricing
!Screenshot_20260320_001644_Claude.jpg
Am I missing something because claude already has pricing in INR. This is a snapshot from official app.
@mohitmalhotra-celigo currency conversion is still cheaper than this, if above is real, I would still prefer foreign billing
I am subscribed to both Codex Pro 20k and Claude 22-23k monthly
how can i convert my subscription to INR to $ because $ is more cheaper

Honestly, Claude is good because of Opus 4.6. I've just switched to a Z AI Coding Plan model that costs only 1/7 of Claude but is only slightly inferior in quality. Goodbye Claude.

Really need an Indian pricing model for the large market here in India
Fair point, Indian market is one of the markets with very high potential in terms of volume, which can be captured by Claude right now. It should have a dedicated India only pricing (something lesser than US pricing). That way penetration can be higher for Anthropic.

As a developer in India, the current USD pricing makes Claude difficult to justify; after forex fees and 18% GST, the cost becomes significantly higher than it appears.
In contrast, tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini feel far more accessible due to INR pricing and UPI support, which directly affects adoption. Introducing localized pricing and payment options would make Claude a realistic choice for many more developers here

Couldn't agree more with you. The only reason holding me back from purchasing Claude AI Pro is the cost. If only the Claude team saw this issue and somehow helped us out...
Yes please, cost is high including the taxes in India in dollars(its almost 24 dollars), should be around 20 dollars or less converted to INR, you should learn from GPT and provide India plans in rupees. Cuz not everyone can afford yearly plans.
this will bring millions of new users to cluade for sure

I actually have an open source project that I started a few months ago. I initially started the project with Claude but as the project grew in size Claude started to hit the rate limits like a lot. So I had to consider paid claude plans but they were in USD and I felt it was expensive so I thought of applying to the Claude for oss and it's been more than a month and I got no response so I switched to codex and codex is very generous I mean it's great and gets the work done especially with the release of GPT 5.5 codex. Man it feels like using Claude opus 4.6 the whole time. It's great.

👍 Strongly supporting this — Indian user here
As a developer/user in India, the current pricing structure creates real friction that makes Claude harder to adopt compared to localized competitors.
Here's the actual cost breakdown for Indian users today:
Claude Pro: $20 USD → ~₹1,900 after forex conversion + 18% GST on top = effectively ₹2,200–₹2,300/month
No UPI support — India's most widely used payment method (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm) is completely unsupported
International card users get hit with an additional 2–3% forex fee from their bank
The INR has depreciated ~13% against USD since late 2024, making the cost creep up without any price change from Anthropic
For comparison:
ChatGPT Plus is available at ₹1,650/month in India (INR pricing, UPI supported)
Google Gemini Advanced is similarly localized
What we're asking for:
INR-denominated pricing (similar to OpenAI/Google's approach)
UPI / RuPay support as a payment method
GST-inclusive transparent pricing at checkout
India has one of the fastest-growing developer communities globally. Localized pricing isn't just goodwill — it's a growth lever. The barrier right now isn't interest in Claude, it's payment friction and effective cost.
Anthropic, this is a high-ROI change. Please prioritize it. 🙏

I strongly agree that INR pricing and UPI support would matter a lot here, especially for individual devs and small teams where a USD subscription plus forex/GST becomes hard to justify.
One practical workaround for API-style workflows is to use an OpenAI-compatible gateway with per-key/project usage tracking and fallback across providers, then keep Claude/official billing only where it is really needed. I’ve been testing https://kiroforge.cloud/v1 for that kind of setup; obviously it doesn’t replace Anthropic adding local pricing, but it can help price-sensitive dev workflows start small and avoid being locked into one expensive billing path.
I strongly agree

This would be a valuable improvement.
Guys by using the claude app in mobile to buy the subscription through google play or apple store the subscription is inr 1999 all rounded with tax included, we can buy the subscription in mobile and use it as it is in pc for the pro. Hopefully this is helpful for people, don't waste money in buying it through USD
Hi Kishan,
some of us our businesses and need proper tax Invoice to claim business expenses, which is not possible through App Stores
Secondly, most businesses are spending on Max Plans+ additional token purchase, there GST Invoice becomes helpful

Claude is great — Opus 4.8 is the reason.
