[BUG] Weekly usage jumps +2% in ~5 minutes; /settings/usage shows “Missing permissions” banner

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

I’m a daily user on Max x20 ($200/mo). One Claude Code terminal, no sub-agents, no parallel sessions. Windows 11, WSL.

Today at 10:00 I started a fresh session and watched usage. **By ~10:05 on https://claude.ai/settings/usage
I saw:

  • current session ≈5%
  • weekly (All models) +2%**

This was light, normal prompts in a single terminal. For Max x20, a +2% weekly jump in ~5 minutes feels like miscounting or hidden activity I can’t explain or verify.

On top of that, the usage page shows a red "Missing permissions. Please check with Anthropic support if you think this is in error." banner, so I can’t self-diagnose or confirm the numbers. When the meter spikes and the supposed source of truth is broken, predictability and trust take a hit.

What would help:

  • audit and correct accounting for the 10:00–10:05 window (including any retries, fallbacks, background tasks, or double-counting)
  • share a short breakdown for that window: which models and what exactly counts toward "weekly"
  • fix the "

" error on /settings/usage for my account

  • longer term, add clear units and a stable real-time weekly indicator in the product

Repro on my side (stable):

  1. open Claude Code, single terminal
  2. start at 10:00, send a few light prompts
  3. around 10:05 the UI shows session ≈5% and weekly +2%
  4. open Settings → Usage → red "Missing permissions…" banner instead of usable data

Thanks!

What Should Happen?

  • The /settings/usage page reliably loads for paid accounts with no "Missing permissions" banner, so users can self-verify at any time.
  • Real-time usage is accurate and predictable.
  • Weekly capacity for Max x20 is increased and/or throttling/cooldowns are relaxed to prevent multi-day lockouts; many Max x20 users report being blocked for days -the plan should provide dependable runway consistent with its price.

Error Messages/Logs

URL: https://claude.ai/settings/usage
On page load a red banner appears: "Missing permissions. Please check with Anthropic support if you think this is in error."

Steps to Reproduce

Steps to reproduce:

  • Open Claude Code, single terminal, MCP agents disabled.
  • Start a fresh session and run a few light prompts (normal coding).
  • Go to https://claude.ai/settings/usage - a red "Missing permissions…" banner appears and usage data doesn’t load.
  • Within ~3-5 minutes, usage increases quickly (session ~5%, weekly ~+2%) despite MCP agents being off.

Same here. Got the banner for the same plan a couple of days ago and it doesn't go away.

UltimateByte · 8 months ago

Same here, visiting Usage page shows popup in top right corner : "Missing permissions. Please check with Anthropic support if you think this is in error." So that's what I'm doing. :)

Same issue here on Pro plan

I've just ran /status and this is the response:

I don't have a Pro plan, and similar thing is happening to me as well

hkbertoson · 7 months ago

Im on the Max Plan and have this issue.

gerrywastaken · 7 months ago

So I figured out the permissions issue and also noticed a strange usage increase while not actually using Claude, and only running /usage and launching the Claude Code CLI a few times.

If you are interested details are here. If not, logging out and back in will likely fix your permissions issue.

@blazejp83 @GDS75 @UltimateByte @pavelbe - tagging you four you as you mentioned the permission issue was impacting you. You might just need to logout and back in again. That fixed it for me.

In my case I move to other site to have different wifi connection and seemed to work.

Don't know if that was exactly what solved the issue, but I did that and suddenly started working back again.

loomitz · 5 months ago

It seems it has already been resolved in my case after the 5-hour limit reset

JaesonM-NJIT · 5 months ago

It works now.

I’m seeing what looks like the same family of issue, although in my case the most obvious symptom was on the Claude usage dashboard itself.

Environment:

  • Plan: Max 20x ($200)
  • Date observed: 2026-03-06
  • Timezone: Asia/Seoul (KST)
  • OS: Windows 10
  • Terminal: Git Bash
  • Claude Code version: 2.1.69
  • Models used: mostly Opus, with Sonnet and Haiku also used frequently via subagents

What I observed:

  • On https://claude.ai/settings/usage, my usage jumped from 91% to 99%
  • That is an abrupt 8 percentage point increase
  • There was no proportional increase in workload
  • My workflow was materially the same as usual

Why this seems wrong:

  • On a Max 20x ($200) plan, an 8-point jump like that felt disproportionate to the actual work performed
  • I observed this on the Claude AI dashboard, not because of any unusual new warning beyond the normal usage-threshold behavior
  • This makes it look more like a reporting/accounting issue, or possibly enforcement logic surfacing through the dashboard, rather than a normal change in usage

I’m not claiming a root cause, but could you please check whether this is coming from:

  • reporting/display logic
  • usage accounting logic
  • enforcement-side logic

If useful, I can provide additional timestamps or screenshots.
