Problem Statement

In the desktop app's Code tab, the AskUserQuestion card now renders inline in the transcript (after #69259). For me that puts the question in the middle of the conversation, away from where I type, so I keep scrolling back and forth to read and answer it. Others want it near the input too (#101820 for VS Code).

Proposed Solution

Add a setting that chooses where AskUserQuestion appears in the desktop Code tab:

  • inline in the transcript (current), or
  • docked right above the input box, like the terminal CLI.

Alternative Solutions

I tried to do this myself with a mod: a tool.call hook on AskUserQuestion that draws the question in the AbovePrompt band and returns the answers. It works, but on desktop the band is capped at 12 rows (e.props.maxRows is 12 while e.viewport.rows is 62), so a card with 3-4 options and descriptions has to scroll. The plugin type docs describe the slot as capped at half the terminal's rows.

If a built-in setting is not planned, please raise the desktop band limit or make it configurable (for example up to half the window), so a mod can draw a full-size question card above the input.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Use Case Example

  1. Claude asks a question with 3-4 options while I am working in a long session.
  2. Today the card appears mid-transcript; I scroll to find it, read it, then go back down to the input.
  3. With the card docked above the input, the question, the options and the input stay in one place.

Additional Context

Related: #101820, #69259, #47305 (collapse button), #90760 (keyboard answering), #102249 (mod band hidden while the next-step box is shown).

Environment: Claude desktop 2.37337.1 on Windows 10, Claude Code 2.1.295.
