Spend-limit refusals on Oct 7 with no spend limit set (incident vmys9qn874h4): usage-credit purchases the same day, billing review requested
What happened
On Oct 7, 2026 between 11:43 and 11:46 AM ET (15:43 to 15:46 UTC), Claude Code refused 18 requests on my Max 20x account with:
You've hit your monthly spend limit · raise it at claude.ai/settings/usage?from=cc_cli_limit_message · your weekly limit resets Oct 12, 5am (America/New_York)
claude.ai → Settings → Usage currently shows "No spend limit". I did set a monthly spend limit at one point and I am confirming when it was set and removed; I will update this issue with that detail so staff can check whether the refusals happened below the limit. Two more identical refusals occurred on Oct 8 at 11:11 AM ET.
Anthropic's status page lists an incident that day, "Issue with spend limits" (incident vmys9qn874h4, resolved Oct 7 21:23 UTC): "some organizations to be incorrectly paused for having reached their spend limit, resulting in refused requests on the Claude API, Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Security, and Claude Cowork." The refusals above fall inside that window.
Billing impact
I had hit my weekly limit that morning, so usage credits were the only way to keep working. Each refusal pointed me to the usage settings page. My first three usage-credit purchases, $243.00, were made on Oct 7 via auto-reload, while these refusals were happening; $1,024.38 followed across 27 auto-reload charges through Oct 11 before I turned auto-reload off. Invoices don't show purchase times, so I can't line them up against the refusals myself; Anthropic's records can.
What I expected
No spend-limit refusal on an account with no spend limit set. Requests served normally against the purchased usage-credit balance.
Steps to reproduce
Not reproducible on demand; it tracked the incident. I have the local transcript lines (UTC time, project, session ID, message) for all 20 refusals and will share them with staff on request rather than post session IDs publicly.
Environment
- Claude Code (currently 2.1.296), Windows 11
- Claude Max 20x, claude.ai account; email available to staff through the support conversation below
Request
Support's AI agent declined review in Intercom conversation 215476361063594 ("not refundable regardless of whether a higher plan tier was available"), and the human thread opened Oct 12 has had no reply. Could an engineer confirm whether my account was among those incorrectly paused on Oct 7 and, if so, route the affected charges for a billing correction refunded to the original payment method, not account credit?
